How much did you spend on your DIY turbo set-ups?
I did a search and learned a lot of helpful info, and i'm thinking of putting together a DIY kit this summer (if i get a good job). I know all of the basic parts i need, but i really haven't seen a price breakdown of all the parts and what not. I was thinking maybe it would be helpful if there was a definitive thread that we could put together as a reference. two sites i've found so far.
http://www.tooez.com/turbo/
and
www.homemadeturbo.com
if you could just give your total amount spent that would be helpful too

You will probably spend about the same as a kit, but the good part is that YOU get to choose each component.

Are some of the parts falling off trucks, because if $3000 includes an EMS I don't see how you could be paying for everything

About $600 for a t25 turbo, bov, injectors, and intercooler from a 97 Eclipse... installed on a 98 hatch "converted" to a D16Y8 (head and tranny). That includes everything from various tools to fuel management and downpipe. And no "gimmees" or junkyard treasures. I found, and paid decent money for all the components. I don't own a machine shop or have access to one, but I did most of the fabbing (adapter plate) myself with a air compressor, die grinder, and some choice language. Boosting 7psi daily, idles/runs beautifully, and eats n.a. Si's for lunch.

Too much...
About 3k but that was for two engines......
Junkyard set-ups are great if your looking for a little power, but nothing beats a turbo perfectly matched to your engine....

i have a B18C in the works...well actually in the mail....for my CX, It's a JDM model, how will it handle boost from a T-25 or T28?? I've been reading through the forums at homemadeturbo.com, and i'm pretty confident that i will be able to afford to piece together a kit this summer. thanks for all the replies

t3t4oe .57trim .63ar is what i would recomend.
I ran a small t-3 on my b16a and it sucked...sure instant power was nice but i had no top end at all, boost droped off above 5k rpm.
Take your time and buy parts that wor with your engine better....
I recomend going with a new turbo over a junkyard turbo because if you have to have it rebuilt it's going to cost as much if not more then if you just bought a new turbo.Out of the 6 junkyard turbo's that we've pulled they have all needed to be rebuilt (or would have)....

Good luck and alot of calling for prices...and it helps that i get wholesale on most everything....but 3k is about where the final price is going to fall little more little less...but that doesn't include tuning...oh and i shelled out only 200 for my turbo...that helped out the figure alot

what if i just get the initial T25 setup, then upgrade to the Big T28 Killer http://www.turbochargers.com/current...t28_killer.htm will that turbo be good enough to provide sufficient boost in higher RPM's?

IMO, absolutely. Even my T25 doesn't flatten out until around 6400 rpm's. Then it's not like the power drops, it just levels off.

Re: How much did you spend on your DIY turbo set-ups? (sporkcrx)
$400 for everything, ECU based fuel/ignition controls. The fuel controls are first rate; the rest of the car is cobbled together pile of... You could go the junkyard route for close to a grand and do a really nice job, IMO.
I traded around some crap for a couple Mitsu SMIC's I joined together, so I consider them free. Especially since my lazy *** hasn't installed them yet.

Re: How much did you spend on your DIY turbo set-ups? (J. Davis)
To turbo my already built block: Rev-hard chilling with the log style $250 new
3" DP was made in our shop out of spare tubing from a rail we built with mild steel. Kinda heavy...
$750 for PWR intercooler
All pipes weremade from composites we already had laying around. We made a kayak.
T3/T4 semi-ball bearing turbo $700~
ECU was homemade... I live with a Computer Science major... $150
Wow I only spent ~$1850.. That's with-out strapping it to a dyno. I can't find a good dyno around here for some reason. My car pulled like a heavy weight champ until the oil pump clocked out and went on vacation.
Oops my bad I forgot my injectors (sleep depravation). They cost me $350 for eight 100lb. per hour low impedance injectors. So I guess it actually cost me ~$2200... Not to bad for a 3rd gen Civic Si.
