Default How low oil has to be to light the oil light?

just rebuilt an h22a. started her up and after a couple minutes the oil light comes on. does it consistently. oil level i left conservative filling it to the lower line. to avoid oil line return clogging.

anyway, i'll obviously add more oil but i was curious as to what the lower limit will be before you'll actually start losing oil pressure.

i think it does not come on unless there is no oil pressure

I think the light comes on at about 3lbs of oil pressure. It will have to be at least 3 quarts low for it to come on. I'd look elsewhere for the oil pressure problem, a quart low won't do it.

I agree with Tony..look elsewhere for your problem.
Did you remove the counter shafts?

theres an o ring found in the cam caps that when not installed can cause no oil pressure.

to prime the pump you just remove the ECU fuse and crank it for a few seconds... do this once or twice and you will have pressure.

just fyi, the light comes on below 4.3 psi of pressure

jeeze, i hope i didn't screw up the motor just freshly built!!! the oil light was on for a minute or two then comes on and i shut the car off right away. never had this happen. usually primes right up and have good pressure when running. i am 100% certain every o-ring and seal is in place. i took my sweet *** time with this rebuild. I even double checked GE's job when they put the bearing cap back on to make sure the o-ring was in there.

well, i'll reprime tonight when i get home and tank the oil up to the top and retry.

Priming will do no good now. Once it is started, it will keep it's prime.
I would drop the pan and double check the o-rings, pick-ups etc. Something is not right.

Do you have an oil pressure gauge? Hell, it could even be the oil pressure sending unit thats bad.

Yea, I'd take out the plugs and ecu fuse. Hook up an oil pressure gauge to a test port and turn it over and see if you get anything.

I know there's a test port on the front of the head but I believe that's only for testing oil during vtec? I'd take off the turbo, then hook the gauge tester up to the feed on the back of the block, where you usually tap for the oil feed for a turbo.

sometimes when a engine sits for a whiule (over night etc) when u first start it the oil light will come on for a sec and then be gone once te oil pressure builds up.

well, i hooked up my greddy oil pressure gauge and there is definitely pressure and it goes up with rpms. so I feel a bit better now. at idle there is not too much pressure (0.5 bar) which is what i remember it usually being. Its hard to hear much with the new engine given i have an open down pipe at this point. tuning the hondata is a bitch and i think the fact that my o2 sensor is at the end of the open downpipe is throwing things off a bit.

Man, what a scare to think there was no oil pressure. I am in no mood to have to start tearing down a motor again any time soon.

i think having a very light flywheel (Indigospeed) makes my rpms drop off if i throttle on and off. when the idles dropped, the oil pressure just would hang really low. I'm not used to tuning the Hondata with very light flywheels. Must be a trick to have some added fuel at the low Maps to accomodate and keep the car from stalling.

Just a little fyi... if you do not have the altenator plug in tact coming from the valve cover it will cause your oil light to flash as well.

i saw a lexus GS400 run for ONE MONTH with ONLY ONE quart of oil in it. It recently passed through my friends shop, the lady said that the oil light flickered the day before. She had her oil changed at jiffly lube a month ago, and there were no serious leaks..

crazy.

to answer the question
it takes less than 5 psi to turn the light on.... normally when theres no pressure it will turn on, wich is sometimes alreayd too late....

make sure the pickup isnt loose, or something is cloggin the oil pickup
