Default how loud is a no-exhaust turbo setup?

Well story goes..
I crashed my car I was about to turbo,
but its still driveable,

so my kit is so close to completion I wanted to just go ahead and turbo it anyways, just for ***** sake, have some fun with it, then take everything off.

problem is..
I had a bunch of parts in a box outside and some ******* bastard stole it.
so I no longer have my downpipe or that flange off the exhaust housing.

but I am determined!! it seems like life is just trying to smack me down and keep me from finishing this ****, but NOOO I aint goin without a fight.

so ANYWAYS, i'm thinking about maybe just slapping on the turbo with no exhaust,
its a 14b, internally wastegated.. so the wastegate and exhaust housing will be just open to the environment, hehe.

Now I dont want it to be freakishly loud.. as I'd rather not draw attention to my already severely damaged car, but I have heard that the turbo itself helps to reduce noise alot.
How true is this?
how loud do you think it'd be??

thanks.

I would at least have a downpipe on it. Exhaust can be optional but you need some way to route the exhaust away from the turbo and away from the car.

You've chosen the path of forced induction, have patience and do it right or don't do it at all. Trust me, you'll be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor much better that way. Open downpipe, not a biggie....no downpipe, eh don't do it.

i ran a open downpipe from colorado springs to denver (~ hour away) and when i got where i was goin, my ears were ringing.

but it seems to pull alot harded with just a DP.

edit: i would def. put a DP on, but exhaust isnt a must, but it will draw attention to your car, cuz it WILL be loud.

Maybe just run a downpipe and a straight through "resonator"? Will definately calm the noise down.

O.K. your main problem will come from the fact that the o2 sensor won't be connected. You will be running extremely rich, and throwing codes. It will melt your timing belt cover, and you will be shooting fireballs and backfiring like a ****. Ask me how I know. It does sound AWESOME though...well this was on a cammed 2 liter engine.

Then you'll just have to worry about the melting of the TB cover and the mind numbing fumes that will trickle into the cockpit. I loved open DP.

haha yeah I had a neighbor ready to get very violent with me when I started my NA car with no exhaust connected to it. You need to make sure you at least direct the exhaust away from anything that will burn/melt. It will melt a radiator. So if you can put a simple 90 on it and point it at the ground may work. The turbo with no exhaust was not anywhere near as loud as the NA was but it wasnt quiet either. I have been suprised to be around a couple of turbo cars with no muffler and just idling around I didnt notice they had no muffler. If you stomp the gas this will surely change but just moving a car around and idling its not that bad.

everyone else is right you need to re-direct the exhaust gases away so get a d pipe and run it open it sounds real nasty when the turbo spools ha ha ha good luck

When I put my drag kit togeather in my drive way i didn't have a welder to attach the cat to the end of the down pipe. Long story short, I drove the car 5 blocks with the down pipe open and it sounded like the world was coming to an end. Anyone walking down the street was stairing at my car and was really freaked out. Maybe my idea of loud isn't that loud but I will compare it to my old 68 camaro with the header dumps open. Not that loud but pretty close

First time i met him we both were open D.P. IT was the most loudest thing i've ever heardon the highway. But when we got exhuast I could not tell a differnce in lost power. I gained low end though.

about the noise level of an open exhaust:
after I swapped in the ls motor, the exhaust didnt line up, and I have been running it open for a few months now. At first I was like holy ****! but I have gotten used to it. when your off the throttle it isnt very loud at all actually, but full throttle is very loud.
I have actually driven right in front of a cops, and havent gotten pulled over. I have gotten so used to it that I will probably just run it open if I go turbo.

the worst part about it is that every single person who sees your car will ask you "hey why is your car so loud?

I'm about to go 3" dp and mandrel piping on my DA but debating on putting a muffler on or not. I'll be vbanding the cat section and the muffler section so I can swap between with or without. I don't know if it is even worth putting on a straight through muffler. Since it's straight through does it even reduce noise? I will leave the Carsound highflow 3" cat on that alone will quiet it down. Has anyone run thier setup like this? Also may be if there's a turn down it may not be as loud because the sound waves won't be shooting directly back. Any feedback on this?

yeah,
its not only my DP that got stolen,
but the flange that exits off the exhaust turbine, and merges the internal WG dump with the exhaust turbine...

so basically i'd just have the wastegate flapper and exhaust turbine open to the air..

exhaust would be spraying out uncontrolled DIRECTLY from the turbo.

dont think I can do that.

******* ******* blows,
i need a damn job.

**** this crap

i run open downpipe and if i have the top on the car then it's horrible, i can't even listen to the radio. If i take the top off the car then the noise is okay and i can deal with it. if you're outside of the car then the noise isn't bad at all.
