How long should it smoke after rebuild (GSR)
So i just did a factory rebuild on my GSR bottom end. It was sitting in a shop for like 2 years and had about 90k on it. I just did a quick hone and new rings and bearings. Its got some blow-by and smokes a little bit of blue smoke but after 20 miles compression numbers are 185-190-195-190, and my gauge reads a little low compared to others. So it should clear up after another 100 miles or so shouldnt it?

should clear up soon, i would change the oil again around a 100 miles after rebuild and again after 1000 miles to get all that metal outta the motor

Yeah, that's pretty descent numbers....especially if your gauge reads low (time to get a new one). My motors smoke for a little because I really slather everything up with oil, but generally after about 15 miles on the motor it's gone. I notice when I do the heat cycling at idle in the motors initial life, that that won't burn off everything, you need to have some load it seems.
I actually just got to about 22 miles on my LS/vtec tonight and I'm clear all around now, but I was smoking a bit when I first hit the street. This GT30 sure feels fun...never had a ball bearing turbo for myself before .

ya it seems to be slowly getting better. It doesnt help that im on a huge turbo and running off wastegate (7psi) and my vtec ecu doesnt work, so im running with no vtec.

a freshly rebuilt motor shouldnt smoke... and just because you have good compression, that dosent really say anything about the oil control ring being installed properly or broken etc etc.. when does it smoke, idle, WOT, decel??

slight smoke at WOT. I called around just a bit ago and most motor shops said its completely common for it to smoke for the first couple of hundred miles while the rings seat.

yeah mostly turbo cars, some people KNOW its the back seal of the turbine side of a turbo and they dont care, takes time from the shop to fix it and that = losing money... you know the rest.

i have built 3 piston/rod sohc blocks, and i just did my first piston/rod dohc motor and NONE of them smoked at all...the motor seals right away, i tend to think something might be out of wack...maybe not going to be the death of the motor, but never the less something isnt to spec.

yep, rings dont seat in a couple hundred miles, they seat in the first 2-5 minutes of running.

Re: How long should it smoke after rebuild (a1320honda)
it all depends on the motor. I remember one time i was tuning a lsvtec turbo that was fresh built. It smoked all over the place for the first hour of tuning and then after that everything cleared up and the compression was 190 straight across. Some motors i dont hardly see smoke at all.

any oil in the DP or charge pipes? oil return flowing ok no kinks, placed right, no swelling rubber hose...etc etc...
