How hot is to hot for engine?

We've had a few hot days come around and I'm seeing my ebay fans are not cutting it. When stock temps never went over 210 ever.

Now we hit a 90F day and temps quickly shot to 220 in city driving so I stopped driving it till the weather cooled down again. I'm thinking I'll be OK till around 240 before damage but didn't want to chance it.

Here's a pic of the a/c fan in pusher mode. I have the exact same fan in puller configuration for the engine radiator (no pic, will have to get one).

Well hot days are just around the corner and I'd like to get this sorted out before they hit.

Re: How hot is to hot for engine?

Did the temperature shoot up to 220 than drop back down or keep on climbing?

Re: How hot is to hot for engine?

Got up to 220 pretty quick once I exited the highway and looked like it was still climbing. I stopped at the gas station and let it sit for a few and then the store I was going to was right there so it got some cool down time and then I hit the highway home. Next day was 90 too so I just drove my truck.

those ebay slim fans are garbage and known for not pushing barely any CFM

I have this one and mine doesnt get over 190..I would be cautious past 210

190? you know I've noticed my fan doesn't even seem to kick on till 210. I've looked in the Hondata S300 and I don't see a way to change that so I assume the ECC doesn't control the fan. How do I lower the factory trigger point of the fan? Physically change a sensor somewhere?

That fan is rated at 1500 CFM. Wow seems like a bold statement for a 13" fan. Sounds like a plan though. If it flows even just over 1000 CFM I think it'll do good. Thanks man. If I don't find something better in the next day or two I'll order that fan.

Re: How hot is to hot for engine?

It used to say 1300 cfm.. idk if there were improvments, but this thing sounds like a small hairdryer when its on.. Kinda like a newer MB. Best 75 bucks i spent after going thru shrouds, and 3 other "hi flow" fans. :thud:

It does have a noticeable draw when it kicks on.. so if you have a low idle already, might want to bump it up.

Re: How hot is to hot for engine?

Try and have your Fan turn on Sooner with the s300 see if that helps. Can you put the stock Fan on the car? If so do it i run the stock fan it works great. If not Building Cheap Fan Shroud will help alot.

Here is a Few DIY's for the Shroud.

Yes my idle is low. I was thinking of getting two of those fans so I could improve a/c in traffic too but if they draw that much it's probably a bad idea to do that.

Where are the fan settings in the S300? I must have missed it because I couldn't find it anywhere in there.
Those DIY shrouds are great. I have to change up my turbo setup though to get one even remotely in there. The intake tube from my turbo runs right across the radiator and I have a super thin pancake fan in there now and it's all sandwiched tight. I'll have to get a pic so you can see what I'm dealing with.

look under the protection Tab, It will say Radiator fan. Then you can put in the settings you like. Hope it helps ya.

You can also set a overheating protection.

Yup, here's a screen shot:

Also, if you click "Protection Help" it'll give you a concise description of what each option does. So much nicer than Megasquirt...

Over heat protection is the last item on that screen, I've checked it a ton of times. I'll guarantee all I had to do was scroll down lol. Now I feel like an idiot, gonna check that tonight when I get home.

What temp is the stock t-stat in these cars? 98 civic here.

Check this fan out. I recently installed it on my turbo gsr. Read all post and it will help you with adjusting fan activation temp etc with s300

Re: How hot is to hot for engine?

Found an old pic on my cell phone from build time that shows the cooling fan.

The intake tube from the turbo runs right under the fan motor and presses against the fan blade shroud below. To get any fan that's even 1/4" thicker than that fan or a fan shroud etc. in there I need to come up with a new intake.

Hottest my car has ever seen was 205 degrees while tuning and doing back to back 2 step launch control. After that the highest I have ever logged was 188 degrees, normally I beat the shit out of it and it won't leave 180 degrees.

That's impressive but what car? motor, stock radiator? fans? have a shroud? need some info as to what's giving you such fantastic results.

I believe it's somewhere around 190F.

Do you have a lower temp thermostat installed? I'm interested to know how this was achieved as well.

The SPAL fans in 13" are over 1720cfm. I'd look at a regular Puller fashion would do a lot better in this situation. you can't lower the factory trigger point of the fan until you change the actual thermostat.

I will look into the spal. I know they are expensive but you get what you pay for. I used a 16" SPAL on a v8 Ranger I built once and it was a beast of a fan. Noisy too. Sounded like my truck was a boeing 747 taking off when that thing was on. I may go s-blade this time to try and keep the noise down a little.

If factory trigger on the fan is 208 ~ 210 I should be able to knock it down to 200 if the factory t-stat is a 190. It's probably just fully opened by 200.

Anyone know the cheapest website for a 13" spal?

The Spal 13" 1710cfm+ is the one I posted the link about. I got mine from www.the-fan-man.com
part # 2044 (puller) $112.50+shippping
Well worth the money spent, shipping was fast and good communication with the seller.

I just looked up my email, it was $130.75 shipped to Texas, from the website I posted above.

There is no cheapest. That is one company that keeps their costs relatively stable across the board. about $130-$150 on average, but you can find decent deals from a variety of companies. You want part number 30102044

18.5 amps. Can the stock fan wiring handle that or do I need to use a relay and just have the stock setup trigger it? Gonna just order that in a few. No point in messing around I need to make sure this thing cools properly.

Re: How hot is to hot for engine?

OEM thermostat's are 185 F..... Drop youre radiator fan settings to 185. Usually my car runs at 180-182 all the time...Even when boosting hard, it will climb in traffic or really slow speeds.

Why have it activate at 208? or even 200. Set it to 185-190 so that it kicks on sooner and starts to get it cooling before it gets to hot. Set the FAn speed to 35mph as after that speed it actually reduces the ability to cool as the wind will do a better job cooling then the fan could at that speed....around 35-40mph

Now if its rising when youre at highway speeds to over 185-190 then you have other problems with the cooling system. I am not a fan of pusher fans...pulling fans do a much better job. But i do realize some set-ups have room concerns.

Im sure the OEM radiator isnt helping you out any...i have a thin fan that came with my peakboost kit, and also a koyo 52mm half size with greddy raditor cap (which increases pressure within the cooling system)

Wire in a relay, using stock trigger.
