how do i turbo my R?
i'm currently debating on whether or not to buy an mr2 turbo.... or to go with my project hatch with complete type R change over (i wrecked my ITR) i want it to be sick fast... and i know i can do it NA but i really love the feel of a turbo and BOV (my friends mr2 is so fun)
so i want to know how i can safely turbo the R motor without blowin it up, and makin it real fast..

Re: how do i turbo my R? (type rizzy)
Just wanted to pass along some advice given to me by one of the senior members of the board...
If you're gonna turbo it, don't bother with the Type-R engine, the compression is too high. Get the B18B from an Integra LS, re-sleeve the block to give it more strength, get good pistons, rods, etc... but not ones that will raise the compression, and upgrade the valve-train. Then put an F-max turbo on that **** and watch it fly! Here's a chart of the stock power output, gains from a DRAG turbo and gains from an F-Max all on a GS-R
Pretty impressive aren't they? Those numbers were on a stock engine. If you build the engine correctly you can raise the psi (to some extent), increasing the power output.
[Note in case someone tries to flame me] Yes, that graph is from the F-Max website and, naturally, they want their product to look good. As with any manufacturer of any product, they may not be telling the whole story. I am not vouching for the accuracy of the data in the graph.

Re: how do i turbo my R? (spyder)
I disagree, these days boost is coexisting well with high compression. My brother's hatch is home to 10:1 JEs and Eagles a custom turbo kit and a DFI running about 375-400whp witha stock B16 head. My car is almost finished, has 10:1 JEs with Crowers full sleeves and a massive turbo (All custom Kit) from XS Engineering. The point is, when U keep the compression high, it helps to spool up the large turbos that give that wonderful top end as well, Just use a DFI or a similar stand alone. As always Boost is Beautiful!!

Re: how do i turbo my R? (Liltrix)
okay cool... all i'll need is some JE pistons and a complete turbo kit from DRAG or F-MAX... and a good stand alone... and i'll boost 6-7 pounds daily... with no problems right?
this is OT but... i need to convince my pops that the ITR changeover to an EK hatch won't be a headache and that insurance will cover the value of the car with all the ITR parts in it...

MiraiZ: Did I say that you COULDN'T turbo an R? I don't think so... You most certainly can, but the high compression means you'll have to tune the hell out of it to make it reliable. but it can be done.
TypeRizzy: Just so you'll know, F-Max claims that with their kit, you can run 10-15 lbs of boost on a daily driver and have it perfectly reliable. They also say that their kit is 100% bolt-up, no hacking required. http://www.f-max.com/hondacuraturbosystems.htm . They have a link to the FAQ at the bottom.

Dude...all honda engine require a lot of tuning when going FI...as a matter of fact all NA engines do...not just the R...But that doesn't mean that the R engine isn't a good choice..
By the way...thanks for the plug on the FMAX...gotta group buy going if anyones interested!!

Re: how do i turbo my R? (MiraiZ)
There are a variety of different ways to make your car suitable for turbo.
FYI A type R can be turbo but on the stock compression I woudn't advise goin over 6 lbs of boost.
You can go with an inlinepro headgasket which will lower your compression to about 9.5:1 then boost a little higher.
You can build the bottom end. that consists of pistons and rods, for more safety insurance sleeve it.
There are a few Type R's on this board that are putting down 280-300 with no internal mods.
you can put a drag kit along with a hondata system and reliably get 300 to the wheels.
As you see there are many ways to go, it all depends on your budget.
jinxproof99 has the inlinepro headgasket and no internal mods and he makes 375 to the wheels. im him for his setup.
hope all this helps.

Re: how do i turbo my R? (FAST94GSR)
I'm going this route too and have a couple of questions:
1) 440cc injectors? or 310s?
2) V-AFC can still be used, right?
3) I heard cam gears aren't really useful for turbo cars, true?
Thanks,

Re: how do i turbo my R? (MiraiZ)
I know all honda engines require tuning, and it should always be done carefully, but the high compression of the R poses some extra problems and requires a little more attention.
FAST94GSR: Any clue how much $ re-sleeving a b18b costs?

Re: how do i turbo my R? (spyder)
for just getting the sleeves done should be around 750. There's a guy here named b18bturbo who can probably sleeve your block and do pistons and rods for around 15-1700. could be less or more.
go to Golden Eagle they'll do it for 750..

woohoo... man... this is making me wanna do my swap even sooner...
how much is the F-MAX kit? after reading their site.. makes me wanna ditch the DRAG kit, simply because it comes with some anti-detonation stuff

For pricing talk to MiraiZ, he says he has an F-Max group buy going. He should be able to get you a lower price...

Do you plan on building the motor?
What are you going to use the car for?
If money is not an issue:
1. Then build the motor
2. Put a turbo kit together that best suits your needs!
