How do I set my timing? 9:1 low compression pistons...
So I rebuilt my motor with 9:1 CP pistons. Stock compression for my y8 would be about 9.6:1.
What should I set my timing to? The turbo is not on yet and I'm still using stock injectors. I've been breaking in and street tuniing the motor for the past 300 miles. My AFR's are kosher, now what about timing?
I don't have an EGT gauge hooked up either. Is there some kind of general rule of thumb I should know about?

The air-fuel mixture isn't as dense as it was with higher compression and with a bigger bore theres more volume in there, so more than likely it'll need more timing. How much is best determined on the dyno, not arbitrarily guessing.

How about educated guessing? I will not likely be visiting a dyno anytime soon.
And break in is done, but the turbo's not on because my manifold isn't done yet.

You could certainly make a safe timing map based upon other people's maps with similar setups or even a step retard based off the stock map (such as pulling .8-1 degrees per lb of boost) but you won't make as much power as you would tuning it properly on a dyno. I would not just run someone elses map however though, even if their setup was almost identical. To me its just not worth it.

I remember reading Jeff Evans saying he advances timing around 3-4 degrees for something like a 9:1 CR, 83-84mm B series motor. You can try setting base timing at the dizzy, then advance it 2 degrees throughout the whole vacuum map. You might wanna ask around and see if that is a good idea though.

1st what r u tuning the motor with? if ur using a standalone or chipped ecu run n uberdata, crome, hondata...,for 9:1 CR u can advance the timing in the off boost sections of the maps (up to 0 in/hg) by around 3*. so total timing at 0 in/hg is around 29-30*. then u can do a step retard from there in boost. but tune timing in boost on a dyno

oh my bad, u have a Y8 motor. timing on that motor is much lower than standard B series i belive. i forgot how the timing curves look like for the y8

Yeah, that's what I'm doing. I have the dizzy set to factory timing. I'm using Uberdata to step-retard the boost timing. I just need a general rule for the vacuum portion of the maps.
Maybe I'll just advance it 2* for now to be safe. Down the road I'm going to find a dyno tuner to fine tune everything anyway.
What about the fact that I'm using 91 octane?
