Default How do I rebuild my 14b?

I have bought several used 14b's. Never fails that soon thereafter they start to smoke. So instead of buying yet another one. I have seen several Diy kits on eBay fro around ~$99 bucks. So I am going to go that route this time. Does anyone know or have a link to somehwere that can provide a how to, on rebuilding a tdo5 turbo?

Thanks in advance.
I greatly appreciate it.

Don't do it yourself. http://www.cheapturbo.com. Full rebuild for $300 includes all shipping and they are a reputable business.

Yeah at $300 youd be better of just buying a new turbo

Yea, I guess your right. $300 Dollars to KNOW that your turbo is in MINT condition and have no worries of it smoking anytime in the near future. Totally not worth it.

I don't have $300 dollars to put towards a new turbo. Its in great shape, just smokes. Spools quickly and the fins are mint.

Why don't you all recommend me rebuilding it?

because dumping $300 into an old $50 14b just seems really dumb to me.

wait 2-4 months and get a nice t3/t04e for roughly $500.

It smokes because the seals are going. It WILL get worse. It could be something as simple as oil deposit build ups internally. Either way it will get worse and will eventually damage the housing and fins if you let it go long enough. If you dont have 200-300dollars to spend on what would be a great "new" turbo, you shouldn't be going FI. I absolutely recommend you rebuilding it. 14b's are great turbos.

I think buying a t3/to4e for a sohc dseries is kinda dumb. Why buy an oversized turbo for $500 when that 14b on a fresh rebuild could produce plenty of power?

he has a b16.

a nice t3/to4e 50 trim with a .48 or .63 a/r would be quite lovely and noticable upgrade from the 14b..
the 14b is a great stock turbo..but its old...and dumping roughly 6-7 times the amount of what the turbo is worth..into the turbo just doesnt seem like a good idea imo.

if he is so keen on having the 14b..just buy another used one...they are cheap enough.

Well buying another used one just leaves the door open for yet another dissapointment when it inevitably starts smoking again. But I didn't know he had a b16 and I certainly agree with you that t3/t4 would be a significant upgrade.

well, I don't want to drop $500 bucks on a turbo right now...aka school. This has been a budget setup from the start. I am trying to see how well I can do, without going crazy and spending $$$ of money. Just b/c you have it, doesn't mean you have to spend it. I agree a t3/4 setup would be best...but the 14b's etc are so widely available and cheap...

So again, why don't you recommend me rebuilding it myself???

Dont hammer me... I think you misread my post. I said buy a new turbo, how is that not reliable?

Thanks for the link. My question is, should I even attempt it. I would think it would only take a few hours to do it....?

y/n?

i rebuilt my 14b. it was an easy job just follow those instructions, and i would highly recomend getting it balanced after the rebuild. also buy an oil reducer to keep your seals from blowing out due to high pressure. good luck

That could be the cause also....I have a direct fitting off my block to the turbo...where can I get a oil reducer?

Balanced? As the instructions say, as long as you scribe a line and assemble it back the same way, should be ok..no?

Btw..who would balance a turbo locally...?

if you say so.
that guy still payed 300 bucks for a 14b,
whether its new or not.. its still just a 14b,

and if can rebuild it himself.. then he gets kudos for doing it in the first place,
along with saving money.
