A shop wants to charge me $150 to do it to my existing turbo. Can I do it myself? or do I send my turbo out? Is that a good price? turbonetics btw.

i changed mine from a straight t4ob to a t3/t4 by disassembling the t4 turbo's P-trim turbine shaft and exhaust housing and installing a .48A/R turbine shaft and respective housing.. I had also cleaned up the t3 shaft and used the new piston ring that was on the P-trim shaft.... all in all it wasn't that big of a job.. the shaft spins pretty freely and there is no noticable play..

but i did hear that you might have to get the shaft balanced with the compressor wheel assembled on the turbo, i'm not sure.. but if that's the case, i might have to get it balanced somewhere and also, is it that big of an issue that i should get it balanced??.. hopefully, i can find a local shop to do itl, cuz i dont want to ship it out anywhere... can anyone offer any input on this??

I was looking through turbonetics 2001 catalog and noticed the turbine wheel comes with the shaft attached and where the compressor wheel is a seperate piece without shaft. Does the new compressor wheel (T4E) just fit onto the existing shaft of the T3 turbine wheel?

Let me restate: Can i unbolt compressor housing and take the nut off and take the compressor wheel off. Then put new compressor wheel and larger housing and put it all back together?

Why has this post received such few replies? It isnt talked about alot...and I think im on to something good here. The gains would be enormous to us all if someone would touch on this topic some more.

Well, I don;'t have a reply, but another question to add...

I have a t4/3 hybrid with a .50 compressor <big enough> but a .46 Turbine... what would it take up up that turbine side to breath better at higher rpm's on my rev happy B16a?

SHOULD I worry about enlarging the turbine side?

What kind of spool loss/top end gain would I be looking at?

Well, they VSR balance the turbos after the wheels are on. So if you just unbolt and change the wheel it will need to be rebalanced.

I leave all the turbo work to places like majestic turbo that know what they are doing. I don't like fooling with things that spin at XX,000 - XXX,000 rpm...

Why would you bother doing that, the TO4B spools sooner and is good for 400+ HP. Are you building a race motor?

u even slightly loosen the bolt the holds the wheels together and it needs to be rebalaced,,, bring this 2 the top tommoro and ill anwser more... way too tired now and i should be sleeping... 330 on the east coast now!

You could have the turbo "clipped", I'm not sure which wheel they do this too but they cut the corners of the wheel/s off....a lot of DSM's have this done to their upgraded turbos....it will cost you about $150. Call Majestic and ask them if it would be worthwhile for how much power you want. Later!

we rebuild turbos at work all the time, ones for diesels. Im in the airforce and we have never sent one to get rebalanced. some of these turbos are the size of you hand and some of them the size of your head. 4 years and about 25 turbos later never had a problem

whenever u take a turbo apart is has to be completely rebalanced... the shaft spins at some xx,000 rpms and a little bit off and the turbo will die out pretty quick...

as for changing the wheels... likes u said from a "b" to an "e" unless ur turbo is gone and u have to rebuild it... it would be cheaper to just sell the turbo and get another one... many wheels will actually fit onto the turbo but then u also have to match it up with a differant housing... if u take a look at whats actually in a turbo... the basics are the turboshaft itself (with the exhaust wheel on the end) the compressor wheel, the center section and the 2 housings... thats basically what every turbo has and they are pretty much interchangeable... u just have to learn though what can fit onto what... or how it can be made to fit...

in theory u can mate a t-series wheel with the housing and backplate to a small t3 turbine section... but this match would just be pointless
