Default how can i tell if i have rod knock/bearing problems

Hey guys,

recently my car started making noise. Not like the traditional loud rod knock that ive seen on some videos, but only when i'm in gear under load, and its not quite a knock, its more like soft knocking type thing, kinda hard to explain. I dont expect anyone to be able to tell me what it is.

However, are there any tests or checks i can do to make sure my rods arent knocking, that my bearings are fine, etc? Because i heard a simple compression test wont always catch it, my compression is fine last i checked. Compression check will catch valve problems though right? Spark plugs look pretty healthy, it sounds fine when it idles and i rev from idle. Doesnt burn insane amounts of oil, just a bit. But my turbo also leaks a fair amount, so i dont really think i'm burning much.

Heck, for all I know it could be my tranny making the noise, its almost like a grinding.

check the oil for shavings...or drop the oil pan and look for shavings in it...

take the oil pan, sucker, shield, girdle if you have one, and then take the rod caps off and look at the bearings. doesnt take long at all. when it knocks can you hear it under load throughout the rpm range, or just really low rpms? stock internals?

i can hear it most under low rpms, but sorta still under high rpms. yes, stock internals.

the sound is just slower and more defined under low rpms, hell even when i just put the car and gear and start going VERY low rpms, and not much load I can hear it. Just to give you an idea, its not even loud enough for me to try and record it, and youd have to listen carefully in the car to hear it, but its there and i'm wondering about it.

rev your RPM while its parked to where it starts knocking. pull out a spark plug wire and put it back in. if you pull out one of the plug wire and the knocking stopped thats your dead cylinder.

That makes me think that it's pinging (as well as a couple other things you said). A motor with a loose rod will still knock while free revving....maybe even moreso than under load (in my experience at least).

if you didnt understand this, have the car running and pull one spark plug wire at a time and then put it back on. the cylinder with the bearing problem wont knock if you have that plug wire off because the mixture isnt igniting, therefore not pounding on the bearing, just simply turning.

pull off fuel injector connectors and see if it goes away, if it does its that cylinder. if not and it is a low thumping noise it could be ur main bearings

that would lean out that cylinder dramatically.....don't do that.....do the spark plug thing instead.

ive concluded that its probably some shaft bearings in my transmission, based on some reading of threads, and sounding exactly like my problem. I'll probably just drive it till I tank that transmission, then get a new one cause I really dont wanna take mine apart
