Hoping for 500+hp daily driver, need turbo help
OK. I've got a few questions to ask, as I'm sorting out my turbo setup...
I am going to do a motor swap in a 1993 Civic CX hatch. Not sure if it will be a B16A2 or B18C, as it depends on what is available next month when I purchase the swap.
I'm looking to get around 500 or so hp, putting me in the low 11's to high 10's (hopefully).
So far what I am planning on is:
JG Engine dynamics built head and bottom end (bottom end good to 35psi boost), Inline Pro manifold (want to keep the A/C), Hondata Stage 4b management with 3bar boost option, Skunk 2 turbo cams, Skunk gears, Skunk intake manifold, Skyline GTR or comparable size intercooler, Greddy Profec B boost control, TiAL 35/40mm wastegate, HKS BOV.
My questions are:
IS this feasable on pump gas? Indiana has 93 and 94 octane gas, plus I'll put in some octane boost. It's going to be a driver, after all...
What size injectors to use? I'm thinking something in the 900cc range, as I don't want to run super high fuel pressures, though I will have a larger fuel rail, rising rate FMU and high-flow pump.
What would be a good turbo to give me power from 2500-3000 rpm up to about 9000 rpm? I was thinking a T3/T4 with a big trim, but I think they might be too small for 500hp...
Any other suggestions? I know that traction, lag, etc. will all be factors, but I'm sorting them out too, so I'm just worried about the stuff I asked about.
But suggestions are welcome...

a) don't get any work done on your motor by JG
b) pump gas can't support 500 hp
c) you can break into the 10's w/less than 500 hp
d) 500 hp is too much for the street. it prolly won't be streetable, and i KNOW it wouldn't be street legal.
that's my input.

Your not gonna reach your 500whp mark on a t3/t4....and your not gonna have a turbo thats spooled at 2500rpms that will even come close to making 500hp.

500hp is a lofty goal. And I don't know if it's attainable on pump gas either.
Turbo-wise, you'll need something bigger than a t3/t4...try a t3/60-1. Or even a straight t4. Lag isn't it an issue if you use some nitrous.
Fuel-wise, you'll need something BIG. 900cc looks about right, but you'll find out once everything is in order. Plus, what kind of standalone ECU are you going with? I heard Hondata can handle 800cc's with no problems.
The only thing I would look over again would be the choice of engine. Bigger is better, so it's obvious as to what is recommended. B18c bored to 85mm, since you're getting it sleeved, etc etc.
To pull out 500hp, you're going to need to run high amounts of boost, 25+. And that demands race gas. Octane booster RARELY helps. For daily driving, you would only need to set it to 15-18psi, since that'll be more than enough to melt your front tires in all but 5th gear. Only then would pump gas be sufficient...barely. *Ever spun the tires downshifting, going 80mph?* Scary ****.
Other than that, good luck.

Go back to the drawing board and ask for a real-world hp goal. Something like 325 or 364.8 or somthing like that.
Unless your looking to spend in excess of $12k, then dont bother.
I hate these newb posts.
By the way. Anyone know how I can run 9's on DOT tires??

Yeah...you can convert your car to rear wheel drive to run the 9's on dots ....but yeah, its not a realistic goal thats why my reply was small.

Use a Hybrid T105/T25 or Mistubishi T88/TD025SH hybrid! Quick spool plus lots of topend power!
Quick spool + 500hp + a honda = isn't going to happen!!

Why not have JG work on my engine? Bad things about them? I know they're pricey, but anyone have reccomendations?
I've been looking at the Dart B-series block. It looks good so far, from what I can tell. Any opinions?
Ninesecrx-
What turbo do you reccomend? Spool-up isn't really a concern, I was just saying it would be nice to have it low. 4000rpm or something is ok, as long as my motor makes at least 70hp off boost! That's what I'm making now on the stock D15.
Prelude_RCR-
I was considering nitrous to spool. I do plan on using the Hondata ECU, stage 4b with boost to be precise. I was also planning on turning it down for the street, and then back up at the track or strip. So, pump gas on the street is cool. I read a story in this month's SCC about Bozz Speed's Evo VI. It runs 26 pounds on 95 octane pump gas.
Slow_ass_4dr-
I sweat like a horse, so I need A/C!
93LSivic-
I think this is a real-world goal. I know by searching this board that there are several members that have 500+ in a daily driver. One was for sale not so long ago, a S200 silver EG hatch. Guy said it dynoed at 520-something at the wheels, plus he says he drives it on the street. And I don't plan to run 9's on DOT's. I'm getting a set of 13" steelies form an 82 Accord made into rims for slicks. Aside from that, I plan to use R-compounds on the street, though they are expensive and wear like ***... And $12k, that's about what I was looking to spend anyway...
Thanks a lot, but any suggestions or reccomendations on engine builders and turbo sizes?

don't do the Dart block either. you'll end up spending so much money on little parts because it comes bare. just my 2 cents.

Rev, I think I'd go with a Garrett GT30 series turbo. Dual ball bearing. 500hp is a lofty goal, but not impossible. st00pid is currently building my car and it looks like we have similar goals. A/C and everything. And yeah, $12k is about what I have into the car right now, but it's probably going to get more expensive because I still need a set of slicks/Bogarts and need to change from a 60-1 to some kind of dual BB turbo with matching T4 manifold to go with it. So maybe $3k more plus misc little **** like thermal coating. It's the little **** that kills ya... Good luck with the buildup and keep us posted.

Have you considered alcohol injection as a bandaid for the octane problem?. I'm picking up a SMC kit and will hopefully have it in a couple of weeks. From my research I should be able to run more boost with more timing. I'll find out once I get on the dyno. Anywho, depending on your mixture, this effectively ups your octane rating to around 100.
Good luck. 500 whp I think is very attainable, just be prepared to spend about 20% more than your budgeted. Something always pops up.

Thanks, man. I totally didn't know that about JG. I guess I'll go the route of having a local shop do it. Thanks!
Cheezefrog-
Sounds great, man. Nice to know I'm not the only one that wants to do this and actually has a plan. Thanks for the advice. Any more?
bruthaboost-
Who makes the kit for alcohol injection? I've considered that option, but haven't heard of anyone that wants to do it. Give me a website or a manufacturer for the kit, please! Also, where do you buy the alcohol for it? At the strip?
Thanks guys. I knew it could be done and that there are people willing to help...
Keep the ideas flowing!

Re: Hoping for 500+hp daily driver, need turbo help (N8)
use a T04E turbo for that amount of power. and importbuilders is a good place to start for building a motor or KG, and even AEBS. plan to spend mad cash. i have a b18c turbo/nos pushing 14lbs put out for me 352hp without the bottle and 410 with. so 500 i think youll be needing to boost about 18-20 lbs. i have a homie pushing 427 on 18lbs. hes trying to get 500 too.
