Hood vents, water, and turbos....
Is there any danger to having a hood vent that'll let rain water go onto a turbo/manifold? I suppose I could just bend up a heat shield from steel, but I was just wondering if the water will lead to cracking. I remember seeing Porsche 935s (race cars) with the two turbos hanging low and in back ready to get all wet, but those have to last 24 hours at the most.
Thanks
Ben

one would assume that its a gamble... I wouldnt take the chance. Cold Water + Hot Mani = crack/warp/etc.
Making your own heatshield is EZ, and cheap.

I think it would make hot spots, cool some of the manifold quickly causing it to crack becuase it expands and contracts quickly. But it would probably depend on the type of material used to make the manifold.

have it for 6 weeks now. No problems in rain. When I stand at a stop sign I can see the heat going up the vents. Final pics are online in 3 days. I have made some sheet of metal with very little holes in it under the vents to protect a bit more against rain and spoting out the cops.

austrian type-R
thats pretty cool. you make it or buy it?
Also, you should make some covers for it for when it rains, something that you can just pull over and clip in.

I bought the Mitsu Evo VII hood ventings, brought it to the bodyshop and showed them how it should look like. I drove many hours in heavy rain and no problems, No water on air-filter, no manifold cracking, no water on valve cover or distributor.

How often does it rain in Australia?
I remember when he had the first vent cut and posted a pic. Everyone was like, "That's butt ugly!". I guess they're eating their words now, huh?! Looking good.

the hood looks really good
A buddy of mine has a LS in his civic with i believe the vis cf hood with HUGE *** vents right above where his valve cover and distributor are ( www.widecoupe.com for pics of it ). Well, his car started running like *** soon after, i think it was water related due to the hood, im not 100% positive, i cant remember. But some things that were hood related that i do know of were:
1) he found oil in his water
2) water seeped past the plug wires and got the plugs rusty
3) someone pulled his plug out when he was parked at the mall
4) he lost a car show
A good idea would be to purchase some lexan glass so when it rains you can mount them over the vents to keep rain out of your engine bay, water on a hot turbo manifold = CRAAAAAAAACK!

damn, you have not tested it during driving, right?!
You have mount it to the engine and to the chassi. That is bad, cause the engine will move when accelerating, you can damage the valve cover or something else.

the chas. mount was loose and just prevented rattling, but i never actually used it. i currently have a old 300Z turbo scoop molded into my hood, but im waiting for paint to post pics.

I had the vis vented hood on my 00si, drove it in the pouring rain, even on my way to NOPI last year, didn't have a single problem, even with my aem cai.

Aside from having the sheild mounted to the frame... it's freakin' beautiful ! What material did you use ?
