Default Homemade turbo project question

This is what the exhaust side of my turbo looks like. I have a question about the part circled in red...

This is my downpipe....The part circled in red used to be covered by a ghetto welded plate. Should I re-weld a plate over it or should I weld a piece so it dumps into the exhaust.

Thansk for your help...this will be one of the many questions ill have while building my turbo project over the next couple months....

Can anyone identify this turbo??

heres my ghettocooler aka starion....Sweet end tanks but ghetto core. It holds pressure tho..

The part circled is where the excess exhaust comes out of the internal wastegate. If you are going to be using the internal wastegate, you want to weld a pipe to that hole and either dump it to the atmosphere or run it back into the exhaust. If you want to convert to an external wastegate you can cover the whole up but then you also need the flapper inside welded up i believe. The dump tube that i just spoke about would then come off of the external wastegate and that hole is not needed. HTH

There is no internal wastegate on that turbo. The only way to run a wastegate with that turbo is either have the WG bolted to the manifold (like there already is), or run a pipe from that hole to an external WG.

oh **** i didn't even realize. I saw the whole and automatically assumed it was internally gated. I would re-cover that whole and run and external on the manifold.

Could you buy another flange, cut the existing one off, and weld the new one to the downpipe? If not just cover it and weld away. Also what kind of welder are you using?

No clue what kind of turbo it is.

The flange fit the turbo fine...The hole was covered by a ghetto weld so I grinded it off, but then I couldnt decide weither to cover it or weld a piece so it flows intot he exhaust...

I dunno...my work has a fab shop and he's gonna weld it...so the final verdict is cover it up!

You'll be using an external wastegate? if so, then cover the hole.

you need to cover that hole in order to use the external gate.
