Help me identify why my fresh turbo blew.
Ok guys here is the situation. I have a Turbonetics t3t4E 50 trim. It started to smoke a little so I took it to a shop to get it rebuilt. I got it back and put it on the car. After a week of driving I started to hear a little pinging noise coming from the turbo (found out it was the wheel hitting the housing)....after that It started smoking ALOT! I took the intake off the turbo and felt for shaft play. There was a ton of shaft play and the compressor wheel was chewed up around the edges from hitting the housing. I pulled the turbo apart and the only thing I could see that looked broken was a Little ring. It looked like a part had been broken from it. Anyone have any ideas about what this is or how it happened?

I would return it to the shop you had rebuild it. I'd also crank over your motor with the feed removed and see if it is pushing oil.

It is loosing oil because it kept leaking and running the car out of oil.

What size feed/return? Pictures of the return? I would also talk to the company that rebuilt it.

Um, ok. Exactly how many times did the car run out of oil?

(Sorry I meant loosing oil) The car never ran out of oil. The car started to smoke so I checked the oil. It ran maybe a quart low twice. I run a -4 feed and a -10 return. I have had the turbo on the car for 2 1/2 years with the same setup before the rebuild.

I would try a -3 feed. And if this is the case I would talk to the shop that rebuilt the turbo.

I plan on that I just wanted to maybe get an idea of what happened before I go in there and they give me some bullshit answer.

What shop rebuilt it?
You might be screwed if you took it apart yourself.... most shops won't warranty the unit if it's been taken apart (they'll try to blame it failing on you messing with it).
The broken ring you speak of is probably either the comp or turbine side piston ring seal, which in most cases is a staggar-gap style ring (supposed to be broken and seal when compressed). It's hard to say why it would have failed unless the shop takes a look at it. If the wheel is truly touching the housing, it could have either lost thrust, suffered harmonic distortion, foreign object damage, etc... lots of different things.
BTW.. that turbo originally came with a 1 year warranty... if it was within that, it could have been sent in. However if you broke the "pookie" on the compressor wheel nut, or on the oil filter, it voided the warranty.

Re: Help me identify why my fresh turbo blew. (degradated)
I see what your saying but I had no choice. I was 500 miles from home when it happened. I had to pull the shaft out and put a bolt through to seal it so I could drive home. Hopefully the shop will be somewhat understanding, but then again....I doubt it.

which "shop" rebuilt your turbo? Turbo rebuilds require highly precise balancing machines and alot of attention to fine detail.
