Help me choose a turbo for my LS-VTEC. odd situation. 300whp max
Hi I. now i know to search, i have been on here longer than my join date suggests, but i have a somewhat odd situation. I currently have a t3/t04e on my stock LS-VTEC. b18a bottom end, gsr head, head studs.
im pretty sure my center housing cracked and is letting a small amount of coolant into my oil. I had it apart this weekend and looked all around and it doesnt look like it is, but this is the only possibility as there was nasty milky oil in it. i rebuilt it with new seals, etc and its still pushing oil past the seal and i am seeing white residue on my valve cover/oil cap. compression tested it to make sure it wasnt a hg, etc. motor is all good.
anyway, my turbo is internally gated, fast spooling and i want to keep it that way. so i either want to reuse my exhaust housing on a new turbo or purchase a new internally gated one such as a gt28r.
Power will be limited to right around 300whp on this motor, so i dont mind running a lot of psi to get it. if i want more power, ill build a bottom end and buy a new larger turbo.
so what are your suggestions? funds are lmited, so the gt28rs is kinda out of the question. i'd like to stay under 700 or so. here are some pics of the current exhaust wheel and turbine housing that i would like to reuse.
hot side - 1.93^2/2.53^2 = .58 i dunno here, prolly a .57 trim
here you can see where the oil was seeping out to
on the exhaust housing it says
FA1
M4
.48
285
vendors, feel free to contact me if you have a turbo that you may feel will suit my needs as i would like to have a new turbo buy the weekend.
Thanks
Burke

stop running coolant through it. if the center section is cracked you will see oil leaking throught the coolant ports. if its not, then you dont have to replace the turbo, just keep running it with no coolant. i have a Garrett 48/60 T3 and i dont run coolant through it and it works just fine. take the lines off, cause ywouldnt you rather cook a turbo than cook your motor?

good idea. i'll give that a shot!
but dont worry i wont kill my motor. i am keeping a super close eye on it. have driven over 5 miles while i have been trying to figure this out.
i want a disco potato, but they are out the price range. i was thinking about the t3 Super 60 maybe

Looks like you need to remeasure. If the 1.9 is at all accurate, you dont have a t3/t04e but a regular old t3, unless some nut job put a stage 1 turbine wheel on a t04e compressor wheel which is relatively unheard of. If the 2.53 is correct then you probably have a stage 3 turbine. Check out http://www.majesticturbo.com They have a decent amount of turbo info on there that is helpful to look at.
Anyway, with that said I'd go with a GT28R. If you search long and hard you should be able to find one for around $700 new.

really, i would just drive that turbo till it blows. what do you have to lose? youre not mixing oil and coolant anymore, so the most the car can do it smoke a little bit. f uck it, cap off those coolant lines and go make some boost!

i may have a nutjob turbo. accroding to this
and here are my specs
2.17^2/2.95^2 = .54
so i think it is a t04E .54 trim. my numbers match up perfectly for a standard shaft
but my turbine wheel looks just like a Stage 1 turbine. the stage 3 looks different than mine. so im think stage 1. its an AiResearch so its a garrett.
man is this weird
and grubere. THANKS SO MUCH for that site and your info. im looking for a gt28r, what are thoughts versus a super 60
thanks

Super 60 is a gimicky turbo. It flows a bit more air than a 60 trim. Thats about it. Its not a bad turbo, but for the price tag, hardly worth all the fuss. Most people kind of like it because it uses the smaller turbine wheel and can support over 30lb/min which means ~300-325whp with quick spool. Compare it to a GT28r, and it will lose. the GT28r is not a new turbo. Been around for quite a while. It was on various Nissan performance cars (s14 and maybe a skyline. who knows). Its BB, flows quite a bit of air, and all around is a great turbo for what you want. Best of all, they can be had for relatively cheap used. If you are willing to buy used GT28r is the way to go. If you really want to buy new, 60 trim t3, super 60, gt32e, and t3/t04e 50 trim are all great turbos to look into.
Like I said, keep an eye out for GT28r's. They can go for under your price range brand new. From most retailers they are about $800 shipped.

Re: (I Have an STD)
yep i rebuilt it with new seals. i have a different restictor now and i am sure i am getting enough oil its now a simple orifice restrictor with a 1/16 (i think) hole in it as per the recommendation of a couple trustworthy people on this site.
with the gt28r i would need a diff manifold flange, right? unless i got that expensive t3 drop in one.
i am leaning more towards the super 60, i would just need a new exhaust flange for the dp. but i want to keep it internally gated with a larger a/r on the exhaust

That turbo looks good , although it somehow makes you wonder why it says its good to 500whp if it spools so fast, something doesnt seem right?

50 trim cant get you to 500 whp maybe something like 400 maybe, my 57 trim is rated to 475 so i doubt a 50 trim will do more...

hell im with brett, plug off the coolant and run the turbo oil cooled. you wont have problems with just oil cooled.

the one from the ebay link. a t3/t04b. i assume it will push close to four MAX. i only want 3 and it should spool hella quick and hopefully peak my torque curve below 7k, so i need to feel the need to take this stock b18a bottom end to 8k
