Default Help A FI Noob Switch From All-Motor To Boost!

Since I recently found out that my all motor build is buring a crap-ton of oil, I've decided to rebuild it this winter for boost...

I was very happy with my setup making 195whp / 135(ish) tq, but I want more..

Setup consisted of the following:

GSR Block bored to 82mm
Endyn Rollerwave pistons @ 12.5:1
Endyn ported head
Skunk2 Stage 2 cams
Endyn valves & springs
Skunk2 Intake Manifold
RC 440's
blah blah blah... lol

Anyways... I'm planning on buying a new stock GSR block and building that one from the ground up. I'd like to stick around 10:1 compression, as I've read that it's good for a basic setup...

I have a basic understanding of FI systems, but I'm having a hell of a time figuring out what turbo to go with. I plan on using my current head & intake manifold, and I'd like to hit at least 300 whp...

I see that T3/T04's are pretty reasonably priced, but I'm not sure if that's going to get me where I'm looking to be... Exhaust manifolds are up in the air, too. I don't have AC, but am retaining the power steering.

I'm on a pretty tight budget, most of which will be coming from selling the all motor parts I'm running right now... (hopefully)... Let's say $1500-2k for turbo & piping/intercooler and supporting accessories (oil lines etc)...

I know this has been beaten to death, but I've filled my head with all motor knowledge, and I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around all of this new terminology... A/R, trims, and the like....

Help a brotha out!

Can anyone offer any insight as to why this would not be a good idea??

1500$ wont get you very far unless you're going to be using knock off parts, used parts, or get exceedingly great deals.

Even as a WD sales for many manufactures and building my own setup, its difficult to get a 1500$ turbo kit thats PROPERLY setup.

~$2k is the threshold before my wife starts getting "concerned"... LOL

I've seen t3/60-1's for like $650-700, so I don't see why $1500-2000 isn't doable...

But my main reason for the post was to try and figure out which turbo will enable me to get to 300whp?

because you need a manifold

log setup 575
oil line kit - 100
injectors 280
fmic- 250
fmic piping- 225
bov- 215
tial gate- 225

thats roughly 2400+ not including tuning

your cheapest bet is just to get a T3t4E 50-57 or 60 tirm with a 63 AR housing. those will all get you to 300 WHP

its very doable, u can find all kinds of used kits that are nice. just get a nice log manifold, 57 trim turbo,3 inch downpipe, oil lines, manual boost controller, some kind of waste gate(tial, turbonetics), intercooler piping and bov and sounds like u already got a tuner and ems.u can find that for probly around 1200-1500. wiseco pistons 450 shipped with rings. as long as u have some decent rods u should be set

I'm not looking for some huge turbo or 650hp... So although I'm really not sure what the hell I'm looking at, the T3/60-1 looks like it'll meet my needs and allow some expansion in the future...

Any other input?

Say I decide to go with a T3/60-1... Any idea what kind of down pipe I'd need? Or would any 4-bolt flange work just fine?

downpipes arent interchangable, you need one thats specific to your turbo and manifold design.

So it sounds like it would be easier to get the downpipe fabbed up based on the turbo & exhaust manifold then?

go with a 57 or 60 trim....the 60-1 is going to be a little big for your goals. It can make upwards of 500whp; whereas, the 57/60 trims are limited to about 480whp when maxxed out completely. That's still enough power but with a better powerband

Also, im not sure how 82mm stock sleeves are going to like boost....

That would work just fine. If you're on a budget, TurboDano sells Borg Warner versions in a B cover for less than $500. Also, if you want faster spool w/ the same peak power, you could look at the same turbo as i have, the GT3255b

Dude, I can't flippin WAIT!!

I'm sickened by the boatload of money I spent on my all motor setup to net 195whp...

I'm even more sickened to think of what kind of power I could be making now had I just listened to the people that said "don't go all motor"...

I never have understood why people try to build "fast" NA cars....dump that money into a turbo setup and you'll be a lot better off.

O man i feel for you. I could never spend that kind of money to get that little power. I said screw it, sold my 98 ITR, and picked up an 01 ITR and went all out on it. Its alot more fun to drive IMO and you dont sound like a super ricer on steroids.

I was very happy with my 195whp... It was a blast to drive and VTEC just screamed...

But... That was then... All of my friends are running factory turboed cars now (EVOs & Eclipses) and they're starting to leave me behind..

Haha, prepare for the biggest money pit of your life. When people say you'll crave more and more boost... its so damn true.
