Default Help! Can't get turbo to spool - more FMAX pics too

Here is a link to a half assed web site to show my FMAX kit. The initial page is where nothing fit. the link at the top is to a second page with pics showing how I cut one pipe and inserted a rubber hose to allow temporary fitment while FMAX makes another set of tubing.

http://home.stny.rr.com/torin/

Please help!! I started my car and I can't get any turbo spooling. I rev past 3500 and no action! I have not hooked up any gauges yet. I have not hooked up my boost controller either so I figure I should spool up to 9psi minimum which is what the tial wastegate spring is at.

I have my hoses connected as follows:

BOV: top hose to manifold vacuum/boost (off the fuel pressure regulator)
bottom hose Tee'd into the compressor fitting

Wastegate: Top hose to manifold vacuum/boost (off fuel pressure regulator--I have a 4way T there)
Bottom hose Tee'd to compressor fitting (along with the BOV bottom fitting)

Is this right????

thanks!
torin

Gruvytune, are you revving in neutral expecting to see boost? that's not gonna happen. anyway, disconnect that line going to the top of your wastegate, that must be open to the atmosphere or your wastegate won't open. Also, there is no need for the bottom nipple on the BOV to be hooked up to anything, just let it be open as well. the rest is correct

I thought the top of the wastegate has to be connected to the manifold.
I am seeing 20psi vacuum on my mechanical tester gauge and when i hit the gas I go to zero but no boost.

Is it normal for there to be a little gas escaping around the dumptube insertion into the downpipe?

I think I understand. the top of wastegate goes to atmosphere which will give maximum boost? Wont my boost go skyhigh though without a boost controller??

I have a Blitz SBCid waiting to get installed. I don't want to just open my wastegate to atmosphere do I??

for now.. top open to atmoshpere and the side to the turbo.. after it's all running good, then hook up the boost controller..

Just trust me and leave the top open to the atmosphere and the bottom hooked up to boost. Your boost will go no higher then what the spring is set at in the wasetgate. If you leave it hooked up the way it is now, your boost will go sky high. the top port only gets hooked up when using some elctronic boost controllers. The bottom port MUST be hooked up to a boost line. This is how the wastegate works.

I'm surprised then that the thing didn't spool like mad with the top to the vacuum!!

Why didn't it??

So, is it normal for a little gas to be escaping around the dumptube insertion into the downpipe?

another thing!!

Where is a good starting point for the BOV? With the screw turned most of the way down or up or middle somewhere?

thanks again for the dumb *** questions but this is my first turbo.

the middle is fine for the BOV screw, just go drive it. as long as the FMU and wastegate are hooked up right you'll be good to go.

there is no FMU. I have a Hondata stage 3 with Boost option. Its got a basic program for the RC440 injectors. Idles fairly well now. I plan on a trip to Toronto in a few weeks for Dyno tuning and chip burning session.

I have a EGT gauge and Oil pressure gauge and boost gauge I would like to get in as well.

any answers to the other questions about the exhaust gas around the dumptube?

I'm suprised nobody mentioned your link to the second page doesn't work. Or did it at one time? It's pointing to a location on your hard drive. I had to cut the page name out and put it on the end of your URL.

did you put a gasket in between the wastegate and the dumptube? and did you put the little valve seat in before you tightened down the wastegate? that is assuming you have a Tial. Hondata....nice. what are you waiting for, go try it out.

any idea why i didn't spool up like crazy with my wastegate hooked directly to the manifold vacuum? I would think from what you are saying, that would have been max boost. or do I have it backwards and does that actually keep the wastegate open the whole time allowing no boost?

the little valve seat is in there as it came packaged (it was taped in there for shipping). there was no gasket included. Fmax says to use permatex copper sealant for a gasket.

The leak is at the dump tube to downpipe insertion. It just slips in there one tube into another. there is no mechanism to seal it really.

That slip joint is a pain. I smeared exhaust patch cement on it before putting it in. The copper sealant doesn't even come close to handling the heat of the manifold. Mine burned away within two days of driving.

Trying to rev the car with no load won't get you any boost. The turbo is probably a little too large for that. Mine is.

not sure about that rubber hose for your oil return, is it at least high temp? Also, is that an air filter on your BOV? That is totally unnecessary, air only comes out of the BOV not in.

At idle, hooked to the vacuum source, the BOV is open and sucks air, bypassing the turbo. F-Max puts it in because they want to try to be emmisions legal and all openings in the intake tract need to be filtered.

You serious? I alway figured I'd have no chance in hell of passing emmisions w/ my FMAX kit. If I can, thats cool as hell, but I doubt it.

You should have no probs passing emmissions in NY and NJ. As long as you don't take out your cat, things should be just the same
