Have to go 81.5 on b16 turbo build?
Ok, turbo newb here, but I've done my homework and read everything I can about turbos and the different setups. I have a b16A3 that I am gonna run with the synapse kit. 50 trim 63ar. not looking for more than 300-350 at first. my question is that when i talked with synapse, one of there techs told me to use an 81.5 piston for proper clearence. he told me they have had great success when the block was between .0035 and another number i cant remember. This is beyond my level. i was just gonna get cp 81mm 9.1 pistons and eagle rods. Lookin forward to hearing from the Shodan on this one. Also how is the b16 gearing when handling boost? Am I gonna be in 5th before I can blink? I was thinking about getting either GSR or R gears, syncros and a LSD but figured i get you guys imput first.

If you are going to use forged piston going 81.5 will help insure that bore of cylinder is straight and will have smooth cylinder walls. However it is not necessary to go 81.5 if the condition of your cylinder/s walls are good. After a good cylinder hone an experienced engine builder could tell you if staying 81mm is fine. The .0035 number is for clearance between the cylinder wall and piston. When you go to the machine shop you would give the machinist your block and one of the forged pistons so that they can get the proper clearance for all the cylinders. Also if you are going for 350whp > a stock B16 with good compression / leakdown can support it on a good conservative tune. For best gearing everyone will say GSR. B16 is fine if that's what you have. Shorter gears will help with lower power levels and if you daily driving is at low speeds (city driving). Highway driving the B16 isn't bad but it also isn't great. 5th gear highway cruising will be at 4500rpm+. LSD is a plus for track and street fun. Spinning and not going anywhere is not fun.

unless you absolutely need to do forged then dont
stock b16 will, and has been proven at 500 h.p completely stock at 30psi
rev-speed has one on this forum pushing 580 if i remember correctly all he did was add cams, and meth injection.
your goal of 300h.p is easily obtainable on a stock motor man
this would also allow you to keep money saved up, and do other things such as better management/t.b/injectors/i.c./etc etc etc

Ya take it to a machine shop and have them check the block out to see if standard size pistons would work, clearance-wise. If the block has been honed before, like mine, and you want to make sure that that the clearance is perfect, like me, go up to 81.50mm, but it's not necessary as long as the clearances are good. I'm going to run a .004 and i'm going to push between 15-20 psi to hit my goal of 350 whp, but I'm i Colorado so It'll be different for you most likely.

unless you have a bare block i wouldnt strip it at all oem clearances are good, and like i said you dont have to do anything to it to obtain 300hp
do a leakdown/compression test, and if all is well boost it

i really appreciate all the advice. I have 3 b16 blocks all together. I am planning on building one on the side as a backup just in case. i will post pics when the kit goes in and let everyone know how long my stock block lasts. I'm curious myself. I will also post my comp. test when i get my lazy a$$ around to doing it. hauler your description was awesome and i get it now. sanman, 750cc? thats not to much? i was thinking 550s but i've never done this before. so your advice is respected.

750's dont have to be ran at max duty 750's will give you room to grow up top i think most people max 750's at around 450hp man fuel dependant of course.
i have a fresh b16 shprt block sitting as well i built mine because we decided to go big or stay home.
like i said many have had stock b series blocks in the 550hp range i ran one for a year with no issues what so ever
good luck man

did you do anything with the head? been thinking about the supertech kit since it's 550$. I need to read up on cams before i decide to go with something different or stay stock. my b163 has 183k miles on it so I was planning a mild rebuild. i plan on posting the build.
