Default Has anyone ran a Holset HX35 with a 14cm^2 turbine housing?

I got ahold of a hx35w with a slightly larger than standard turbine housing (standard is 12cm^2).

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the HX35 and that particular housing. If so please share your experiences.

I have seen a few people running the 12cm housing - if you are, please comment on the amount of lag, and feel, etc for the 12cm housing.

Can anyone make a speculation as to how this will perform, lag time, and/or any other information.

My setup is stock bore 1.8 non-vtec

Built motor and ported/built head on a tubular style manifold.

Not a lot of guys running these. . .

Here's a picture just for kicks.

I'm hoping someone out there has ran the larger turbine housing. . .

From what I have read in other threads, the standard hx35 spools at 4400 or so on most b-series setups. . . everyone concur with this?

I saw a thread of his abut it. . . I don't think he ran it (at least from reading that thread).

He mentioned something about giving that turbo to one of his buddies running a 2.3 engine of sorts. I think he was going to try the HX30 on a semi-stock b-series setup.

Would be great if he would see this thread and hit me with some knowledge.

Search the old Holset threads, a guy named Hoggy (I think) was running the 12cm^2 on a B16, and he related his spool. I'd figure with the extra displacement and a bit more compression the 14cm^2 would be similar for you. Hope that helps.

Remember, on here, there's no such thing as too big a turbo.. so just run it and see how it is. Not like you're spending alot on it

I am happy with the spool of my HX35 on my JDM b16. I have 10 psi at about 5000 rpms. It is pretty laggy; but it keeps me out a trouble (stops me from getting on it all the time). It seems like all the boost hits at the same time, like I have 2-3 pounds and it's barely moving then I hit vtec at 4500 and it comes to life.

DO IT.

I know there is a few users on http://www.homemadeturbo.com that have used that and have liked them. I would make a post on there.

I wonder if the turbo will come on sooner in an LS. . . I'm hoping it will. . . it's nearly a 2.0

I better be able to at least spool it by 5k. . . or I'm hosed. I can't see myself reving any higher than 8.5k @ the highest.

Which turbine side did you have; 12 or 14cm?

Did you "torch" the divider or did you build a split manifold?

Any boost control problems with the internal gate?

I just wanted to bring this back.

I'm VERY close to having things ready for assembly. . . finally

Anyone have any additional personal experiences with the HX35 - I'd love to hear em' before I slap this beast on.

I'm considering swapping out the 14cm for the 12cm housing prior to even boosting - I need someone to talk me out of it

Might as well just leave the large turbine housing on. If it's too laggy, you can worry about it then. The best turbo is the turbo that makes you feel that it's a little laggy, but scares you on the top end.

My primary concern is that I am running out of money. I'm afraid that I will get it all put together - and it will perform on the dyno, but not on the track. . . then I have to drop more $$$ for new maps, etc.

I'm going to go w/ the 14cm^2 anyways - I just may kick myself later. I was hoping someone on here had done it so I could get some feedback prior, but it's not looking good.

Most everyone has only ran the 12 and 9 cm housings as far as I have read.

WHOA 18cm^2. Now I don't feel so bad that I'm going to be rockin' the 14.

LMK if you need a smaller housing for it on down the road. I have access to a couple very affordably.
