Is GT35R worth it? or SC61 better deal?
Im going to 450+ whp on pump gas. I have One-Fab t3 top mount, tial 44mm, 1000 cc injectors, gsr, victorx IM.... (450whp will be comming in fall when i finish building my block, but id like to keep the same turbo setup till then, ill settle for 275whp with whatever turbo i buy now)
Anyways im buying my turbo this week. It seems as if the SC61 and GT35R both provide me with the power I am looking for, except i hear the GT35R will spool 1000rpms faster as it is the BB turbo, but I have also heard it will spool the same. this is a street car so the bigger the power range the better. but is the 35R worth the extra 500$?
I have searched gt35r vs sc61 and someother like combinations and all the posts tell me they will supply the same power. Does anyone have any hard facts about spool time? I think you guys know what I need. I talked to Matt @ one fab and he pretty much said SC61 would be my best bet as its spool is about 1000rpms slower (I will be running 10psi for now, assuming around 6000?) but the money savings could go into other parts. Does anyone know how long (milage) these turbos are good for before need of rebuild (assuming proper cool down and such) im getting off topic pick me a turbo

personally i dont think a gt35r is worth it for the money, u can buy 2 sc61's and make just as much power, but a little bit more lag.

a pt61 (t4 exhaust sdie) made 23psi around 5k on an 83mm built gsr. thats waht im runnin on my2.1 liter built ls/vtec

I'd avoid the Precision turbine housing as the T31A housing has been pretty well proven to make better power and spool quicker.
Having drven 2.0L cars with the GT35R and a t350/82mm 56-trim GT40, they are very similar. There is not a 1000 RPM difference in spool and the shift recovery on the GT35R isn't much better then the journal bearing equivalent.
Although, if you know where to look and have a little bit of a hook up, you can get real GT35RL turbochargers (with the 3.5" outlet) for a little over $900.

I would say over 90% of everyone here making over 400hp is using a precision turbo. I also know as far as precision turbos go. what they sell to you DSM guys is not what the rest of the world gets, they support way less power and comes with ultra small exhaust wheels

i got the GT3561e turbo, basicly it has the gt40 compressor with the gt35 turbine wheel, and the price tag was pretty cheap, although Ben @ importparts.com gave me a free upgrade from the sc61 to the gt35e. Either way, i'm extremely impressed with this turbo, I'm getting boost by 3800 on a 81.5mm GSR and 1bar by mid to late 4k range. its an amazing powerband.

guys are running 9's @ 140 mph on 3000 + lbs EVO's with GT35R. I think for most people that is plenty of turbo. that and the boost response on the GT35R give it my vote. but if you're really hurting for money go with the SC61, which is also a proven good turbo.

at 11psi on my 81.5mm gsr I made 411whp with a killer power band. Its from precision and Ive had it all season. My engine has 611 miles on it, that is all track and dyno.

Please. Hold a PTE housing in hand next to the T31A Garrett housing and then tell me the PTE housing is better.
There is a reason I have never owned a PTE turbo. Out of the 5 close friends that I have running PTE turbochargers, ALL of them have had turbo failures. I've ran other turbochargers for years without problems though.
If it's between a REAL GT35R, direct from Garrett with their custom 3.5" outlet exhaust housing vs. an SC61 from PTE, I'd definitely get the REAL GT35R regardless of price. You can get a Garrett T350/GT40 56-trim 82mm turbo with Garrett housings for under $800 though. None of this PTE housings with Garrett wheel and crappy bearing BS.

I wasnt saying you know nothing at all was just looking for more imput on the topic. So basically with every product out there then there is the name brand and then the sister company that uses cheaper parts. Ive been using precision for three years now and have no complaints. Though looking at going with a larger turbo such as the SC61 i would rather spend the extra money if my power band is going to be that much wider.

Precision turbos and DSM's do not go hand in hand. The DSM lacks the oil pressure to the turbo - which always ends up frying them. I know MANY DSM guys who have burnt up PT quickly - but they last forever on a honda. If I recal correctly - Rod from Precision even addressed this at one point.

Insufficient oil pressure?
If you are feeding the turbo from the head, ok, you have a valid point. But if you source the oil from the oil filter housing, you will see over 60 PSI oil pressure LONG BEFORE the turbo gets up to full boost on anything larger then a T25. Pull the B-shafts on a DSM and you will have 80 PSI oil pressure in the filter housing by 2000 RPM at full temperature. But then you have too much pressure according to some turbo builders and blow out the seals in the turbo...although I've never had that issue.
