DOH!!! Which caps were backwards? what cams are those? sorry about your loss. youll probably have to take it to a machine shop and see how much material they have to take off to get that machined out. I believe u dont want more than like .0025-.0030 cam to journal clearance

From my experience, the head is junk, unless of course you have a fancy port/valve job on it-- it will take a lot of money (300-400) to find a company that will do a hone on the cam journal. But maybe in my area good machine shops to do that kind of work are really hard to find.

i would say find a set of stock cams and run them (w/ the caps on RIGHT), and see what happens.
In the worst case sencario, i dont think u would mess anything else up but the head some more.

mine was a lil worse than that and I ended up seizing the cam in the head. had to take it apart and pop it out of the journal haha.

I put the #3 cap on backwards which starved 2 and 1 from getting oil. And those were GSR cams. Now their junk and I guess the head is too. The head is stock but another used GSR head is $300-400. I was hoping I could get it fixed for less than that.
Ive gotten some different opinions. A local engine shop said the cam clearance isn't all that terribly important and to sand it down by hand. But the cams are def not fixable. I dont really want to mess with it myself.

why would the head be junk? If you replace the cams will vtec still engage? Would the car be driveable? The same thing happened to me and my car is perfectly fine after a little bit of sanding.

Why would it be junk? Because if it costs more to fix than it costs to replace = junk.
And I dont want to risk my 5 grand bottom end on an iffy head. Even with new cams, it may eat into the journal if not fixed properly, and metal shavings will be pumped throughout my motor. No thanks.
I was hoping some head shops would respond to this thread and give me an expert opinion. Any recommendations of shops to contact?

Get a strip of that emry sand paper they use to polish cranks wrap it around your thumb and sand in the direction the the cam spins. All you need to do is knock down the high spots don't go crazy. From what I can see that should be fine. Cost you about $5. Seriously don't throw that **** away.

And the only way ur going to ruin ur "5k" bottom end is if heavy aluminum shavings make it to the bearings.
knock the highs down and find another set of stockers and see what happens.Just let it idle up to temp, check the oitl for shavings, then drive it not in vtec, check the oil for shavings, then rip the car and check the oil for shavings.
I really cant see anything getting fucked up besides another set of cams, which are cheap.

you can get line hones done out here (san diego) for like $100. not sure if the $200 youre talking about includes shipping. that price is for heads or bottom ends

I just came across an s2k head that was damaged like that. My machinist fixed it for me, he said that if you sand the aluminum off the cam, it'll trash the cam. You have to chemically remove the aluminum from the cam, and then polish the cam in the direction of rotation. Then smooth and polish the cam bore removing as little material as possible. Most of the time it can be fixed that way. If the head is too jacked up, you'd have to grind the cam caps and have it rebored.

junk the cams and send the head to a reputable head guy .... that doesnt look half as bad as the head i damaged
btw get some R cams to replace those cams as an upgrade
