You're probably going to have to take it to the state ref. If so, your only way will be to return it to stock. Go to court and find out.

just pay the ticket its easyier than just going back to stock. I think the ticket ranges from 200-400 dollars.
I've gotten three state refs. I went through the trouble of fixing all the stuff and going back to stock the first time. But ended up spending more money.
The second two state refs I just plead not guilty in court and the cops didn't show up so they dropped all charges.
A lot of my friends just pay the ticket. The prices might have gone up recently but a year ago the first charges is around 200 ish and I heard a friend recently had to pay i think around 400.

I say extended the crap out of it and fight it.
That's what I did last year I extended it 9 months then showed up to court and the judge didn't even care he just made me pay 50 bucks and let me leave.

Well I'm considering doing the same thing,
registering my car out of state, I've had a state ref ticket,
paid 450 to the cent. I was driving around my car
for about 6 months after getting tht ticket.
Although it says on the ticket "take vehicle home immediately"
I still drove the car around, had a few cops behind me, but never
got pulled over by them. I'm not 100% sure, but that's what I did.
As for ur smog ticket issues, I believe u can register ur car within
California still, and not worry about state ref either.
I think if you live in a small town up in the mountain
areas, they don't require you to smog your car. Ppl hve told me
to get a P.O. Box in that area, although it's something
to do more research on, just what I heard frm a few friends.
CA is a pain for us... But it is what it is.

if u dony mind me asking...what town in norcal did this happen?
i had a similar thing happen to me in pleasanton...got pulled over...hood popped. officer saw how modded the car was (700hp build), and called two back up police cars.
they came w/ yellow note pads, and wrote down a bunch of **** bout my car concerning mods while i sat on the curb.
then they got deep in my engine bay and underneith my car.
had basically the ultimatum of getting reffed...or speaking up. the cops wanted me to tell them everything i had, and point everything out to them...im guessing educational purposes for their squad. i told them what they pointed to...and in the end let me go...w/ ****-stained undies ...
that's my crazy story.
right after that day, i pulled off my 3" dump (dump + huge cams = attention getter), and swapped in a very quiet, stock looking exhaust, and i drive very cautiously...still my daily driver. been good since then.
my boy got reffed less than a yr ago. he had to pay $600 ticket.
so expect to either pay that ticket, or find someone to do a motor swap w/, and just swap in a 100% stock long block.

Re: Got pulled over, poped hood and everything, california
Had the same thing happen to me in SoCAl twice in two different cars. The first time I went through the hassle of putting everything back to stock and went to the state ref. for inspection. These guys are so **** and if they see something that doesn't look OEM, they will not pass it even if it passes the tailpipe sniff test. The inspector pulled back my carpet to check the wiring to the ECU and saw some wiring that did not look stock. Long story short, I ended up having to take the car back three times until the inspector was satisfied.
The second time I did what all my friends did and just showed up to the window at traffic court and paid the $430.00 fine. They didn't care if I got it fixed or not, they just wanted the money. I would try paying first because you will save alot of time and money. In the end it is a court of revenue, not of court of justice. They want your money and will make it as easy as possible for you to pay. Good luck.

B4 this thread dies out,
I was gonna ask, wasn't this car
deemed as a "gross polluter"?
Would it still be considered a "gross polluter"
if running on.. E85?
This probably sounds like a stupid question,
but e85 is supposed to burn cleaner, soo what would
be the problem driving a boosted, say.. gsr turbo
on e85 if it burns cleaner than pump gas?
Or am I just lost?

Re: Got pulled over, poped hood and everything, california
i wouldnt worry about the cop trying to get you for registration fraud, i dont think its against the law to have a car registerd in another state, I'd deff hate living in Ca just for the hastle you guys seem to get.
thank god NY isnt so bad, but any aftermarket exhuast system is illegal i always get a fix it ticket, and go back to the police station and say i was drag racing at the local track and had it off, and they say start it up and its quite so they sign off, but if anyone is going to pull something like that make sure u ask the officer that gave u the ticket when he's working, to make sure u dont run into him the next day...
Also my b16a dosnt pass state inspection, so i buy a inspection sticker from a friend and just slap it on my car never get caught, but after 2 years when the registration runs up, the dmv sends a letter saying to renew and they need a inspection # so i have to take the car off the road take insurance off, re register/insurance get temp 10day and find a inspection sticker from someone, just a little loop hole i figured out.

From what I understand, the Pheonix/Scottsdale/Gilbert area does full smog, but further south, Tuscon, Tempe, Yuma, etc do NOT have smog testing. Seems to me as though it goes by county. This is similar to Virginia and parts of new york.
