Garrett Turbine Wheel Replacement
Ok I have a t3/t40e 57 trim turbo by Garrett that I'm rebuilding. I bought it fro a guy on here, and even though he said the turbine wheel was in good condition, he lied. Go figure. So I bought a rebuild kit and I cleaned everything, but now I need a new wheel and shaft. I bought one from bae turbo systems, but it was a stage 3 wheel with a 65mm exducer which is too big for the housing it came with. I measured the housing and the right wheel should be a 57 mm exducer wheel, which I can't seem to find anywhere. Does anyone know where to get this wheel and shaft? Or should I just fork out the money for a larger turbine housing that fits this wheel? Any suggestions are helpful. Thanks in advance.

Re: Garrett Turbine Wheel Replacement
that seems awful small for a 57 trim.
are you sure you really want to use this thing? new 57s with stage 3 wheels are $600-650 for precision or garrett

Re: Garrett Turbine Wheel Replacement
Do I want to use that small of a wheel or do I want to use that small if a turbo? I have a gt30r that I'm using, but this would just be used as a backup. I'm not looking for more than 350 to the wheels. Plus I have the full rebuild kit already.

There is a guy on one of the other forums that rebuilds turbos. I will get you his email. It will have to be balanced once you do there.

Re: Garrett Turbine Wheel Replacement
^ya that would be really helpful. I can rebuild it, and I have someone that can balance the cartridge once it's put together, but I just need a wheel and shaft of the right size to finish her up. Can I find a larger turbine housing to fit the stage 3 wheel?

Re: Garrett Turbine Wheel Replacement
here's what you need for this.
If you're saying it is a true "stage III", then it is a 65mm exhaust wheel. The "Trim" measurement is based upon the compressor wheel.
http://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchant...egory_Code=TWH
That is a stage III exhaust wheel/shaft. if you go smaller, it is a stage II or I. If you go larger, it will be a bit of a mismatch for what you have.
Good luck on your rebuild.

Re: Garrett Turbine Wheel Replacement
So I have a 57 trim compressor side, yes. I measured the exducer size and it's 57.5mm which I'm assuming is 57 mm with .5 mm clearance. I got this wheel and shaft from BAE turbo systems which is a 65mm wheel.
http://baeturbosystems.com/compresso...1-3-1-2-3.aspx
This wheel is too big for my 57 mm housing. Is the ATP one any different from this one? The measurements look the same.

Re: Garrett Turbine Wheel Replacement
I don't think I have the stage 3 turbo because the turbine housing measurements are 57mm where the stage 3 wheel I ordered is 65mm and doesn't fit. I guess I'm wondering where I can get a stage 2 or 1 wheel that will fit in my turbine housing.

Re: Garrett Turbine Wheel Replacement
I understand that they aren't the same. I have a Garrett 57 trim compressor side with the serial number 466159-5003. I measured the exducer part of the turbine wheel with a micrometer and it was 57 millimeters in diameter. The exducer of the wheel that I ordered measured 65 millimeters in diameter so it doesn't fit my 57 millimeter diameter turbine housing. Am I getting this all wrong? Trim doesn't matter. I'm putting everything in terms of millimeters.

Re: Garrett Turbine Wheel Replacement
Well, look at it this way
Your inducer and exducer measurements "switch" when measuring the turbine wheel relative to the housing. Also remember that the wheel inducer (diameter) blades fit slightly behind the outlet of the turbine housing. You don't visually see that portion. It sits behind the volute
Unless someone else took this turbo apart and swapped turbine wheels completely, that is the correct whee/shaft for that housing. The 466159-5003 only uses a stage III as a standard.

Re: Garrett Turbine Wheel Replacement
Well crap. Because everything that I was describing was correct...I guess he must have switched it then. How would I go about getting the right wheel now or should I just try to find another compressor housing?

Is this the right turbine housing if I decide to go this way?

Re: Garrett Turbine Wheel Replacement
man you really need to actually talk to him before you buy anything. He can get you so much better prices. I just sold him a 60 trim Garrett t3 that he is goin to rebuild. I am sure he has housing you will want just laying around. You can prob buy the turbo I sold him after he rebuilds it for the price of what that housing alone runs if not just a bit more. He also accepts trade ins. The one I just sold him is a Garrett t3 60 trim .60ar comp and a .48 turbine. Will spool pretty fast like full spool around 3000 but will only make 275 to 300 whp. I went bigger as my goal is 350 to 400whp.

Re: Garrett Turbine Wheel Replacement
Ok so I'm getting a lot of help from someone, but I cam across this chart. Is this right? It says the stage 3 exducer wheel for the T31 Stage 3 is 56.6166mm in diameter...Now I'm all confused because the stage 3 on this chart should be the right size for my housing, but the stage 3 65mm wheel I have now shows up as a T4 P-trim wheel. WTF...
And I'm looking at the 6th one prom the bottom on the right side of the picture for the Stage 3 and the 2nd one from the bottom for the T4 P-trim.

Re: Garrett Turbine Wheel Replacement
Check 6th one from the Bottom in the turbine column. That is the stage III wheel (Stage 3 T31). It says 64.9996 as the wheel inducer (That is the wheel diameter).
Remember to see my visual illustration above. Once again, you're reading the turbine measurement types incorrectly and have the inducer and exducer backwards on the turbine side. The exducer is correct at 56.616mm.
Leave the second one from the bottom alone. You're confusing the inducer of 74mm, with the actual trim that you want at 76mm

Re: Garrett Turbine Wheel Replacement
I though when u said the turbine wheel, you meant the exducer size but u really meant the inducer was 65mm. That's what got me confused. That ATP link u sent me is the correct one. Thank you.
The one I ordered and got shipped was a 65mm exducer, the outer smaller diameter wheel, and 74 mm inducer, or larger inner diameter wheel, which is the t4 p trim I was talking about.

Re: Garrett Turbine Wheel Replacement
So send it back in exchange. I guess I'm not understanding what the issue is.
I guess this is done. I've shown you from the previous post from ATP Turbo that you need with a direct link, and it corresponds with your own chart (6th one from the bottom turbine side). That is the one used. If you want to keep going through your guy, that's up to you, but it looks like he's just going to say that what you have is the correct one when it isn't.
Good luck
As one last attempt.. here is the link from before that corresponds with the turbine shaft/wheel you need. Buy from here.

Re: Garrett Turbine Wheel Replacement
Now I understand why that's the right one. I just got confused on what you meant by exhaust wheel in the first post. I though you meant the exducer was 65mm but now I understand. Thanks so much!
