Garrett GT40 vs. GT40R
Has anyone on this forum actually used FIRST-HAND a Garrett GT40 journal-bearing turbo? What motor was it on, and what RPM approx did you start seeing boost build/full boost?
As my SFWD build moves along in it's stages... I'm about ready to order a turbo for my setup. While I originally planned on using the 40R, I'm not so sure I can justify the $850 price increase just to have BB.
Better yet, has anyone on here used BOTH of these turbos on the same, or different cars to offer a more precise comparison?

WillieWillieFast had a GT4088 jouurnal bearing turbo forsale in the classifieds recently. He'd probably be able to tell you how it performed:

I have GT4067 with .81 a/r on my car and lag is not really there. I took my car for a rip with running extremely rich and vtec set at 4000rpm, I got full boost by 5300 rpm. I realy like this turbo. I cant wait to put the big boy on next year

So you're non BB right Ruben?
I thought you were going R as well. What's the big boy for next year? 42R?

the R turbo's are def. worth the extra money. not just for initial spool up, but for boost response between shifts.
ive been considering selling my 40r for a 42r? i cant make up my mind though, and im broke haha

this turbo will not make as much power as the gt40R however it will still be capable of excellent power levels, with very efficient performance. power up to ~730whp with low IATs and very low backpressure is easy to attain</TD></TR></TABLE>

Re: Garrett GT40 vs. GT40R (Turbocivic94)
I was actually just informed that the journal bearing GT4088 is only offered by Garrett as an undivided T6 turbine-sided turbo. Weird. Looks like I can get a killer deal on the 4088R so I'm just going with that.
