g soHow much do your "custom" turbo kits end up costing?
I hear all this talk about it being so much cheaper to put your own kit together than buy one already done. From what I have seen putting prices together for my self I come out a little over the price of drag and revhard. I am using tial wastegate and greddy bov. Is everyone who talks about cheap custom kits just cutting corners or am I just over building my setup? I used all braided steel feed and return lines, stainless downpipe with flex joint, My own kooks stlye 8 gauge manifold, I am coming up at around $3000. Oh I am also counting the price of a pusher fan, and a big front mount intercooler 24x12x3.5 for $550 which I thought was pretty good. Let me know what your running and the total cost to get it going..

it just depends on the kit and your goals. Mine is coming to around $1000-1200. I am using t3 turbo, used SFP manifold, modified/used starion intercooler, afc hack, fpr, and used waste gate and bov. The downpipe will be custom and i will run all the piping myself. Probably throw in a manual boost controller. Then again, I am only gonna boost around 7lbs. It all depends on your goals.

-Turbonetics 60-1 HIFI turbo
-Tial WG & BOV
-Custom steel braided Fuel and Oil lines
-Jet coated Mani, exhaust housing and WG dumptube
-Spearco IC, 20x7x3.5" core(I think thats the correct size)
-Custom Mandrel bent IC and charge piping
-Custom Mandrel 2.5" DP w/ custom exhaust cutout

Well so far it sounds like most of you guys who go custom have just as much if not more money invested than if you did a kit. Of coarse you got exactly what you wanted instead of what someone else thought you needed. Thanks for the input.

I'd feel safer with a turbo, I've heard too many JRSC horror stories. I never even installed mine.

When everything is said and done 3000 (Including a AVC-R and Hondata) minus tuning.

It's all about what you're looking for in a turbo kit. Some people prefer to spend $4000+ so they can have a lot of turbo lag and traction problems at 80 mph. I chose to spend <$1000, have very little turbo lag and traction problems at 50 mph.
I am completely satisfied with a "junkyard" setup I put on my own car for $655, including intercooler, fuel management, and every single wire and bolt. It's daily driven at 7psi for 3000 miles and counting. If I nail it in 2nd gear, the tires spin all the way to 60 mph. That's good enough for me.
So the question is: What will it take to satisfy you? Then build accordingly.

praise that brotha
i need soemthing with top end for my ITR, i got t3/04e 60trim and 63 hot side and its a little laggy but nothing to complain about. top end is great though. one of my friend has a smaller trim than me on his itr and says his starts not flowing well at like 8k, nothing like still having good spool at 9k

>>just because your smaller quicker spooling turbo is faster off the line, doesn't mean you'll win.<<
I absolutely agree. However, I use the steering wheel. In the environment I built the car for, the turbo kit I built does a great job. On the strip, it doesn't. That was hardly the point of my post however. I'm trying to make two points:
1) You most certainly can build a great turbo kit for less than the price of a "prepackaged" one.
2) Define your needs before you do anything. And be realistic..
If you start with a "junkyard" setup. Performance gains will be substantial for the amount of $$$ invested. And, more importanly, you'll gain *knowlege*. After that, you have to spend more to gain less. That's how the game is played.

ahhh, i see now. Ok you'd beat me when it comes to a road course for sure then. I understand about what you were saying otherwise too. It's just that most people now are building their cars to be ***** out fast. For the track and street, so the greddy kits and so on just don't cut it anymore.
