i just thought of something. from what i hear, the stock dsm turbos begin their spool at like 2K, while other turbos start to spool up at around 3K-4K RPM. if this is right, what about when someone has to do some freeway/highway driving? i have an LS and i do quite a bit of driving on the freeway and i usually cruise at around 80 mph which is about 4K rpm. i want to add a turbo and was thinking about using a t25, 14b, or t3 but if they begin spooling at like 3K or earlier, then i'd be in boost for a pretty long time if i needed to drive a far distance. what do you others do?

The turbo is only going to create boost when the engine is under serious load. When people say "I make boost at 2500rpm", they mean at full throttle/load.

Yeah you wont be boosting just driving around not under wide open throttle. i just drove from dallas to the bay area, and i did not boost at all, except going on/off ramps do not worry about boosting while doing freeway driving.

This of course is very different with superchargers which are pulley driven and boost proportionally to engine rpm.

Go easy on the noob. That was a very logical question for someone who is just getting into FI and maybe hasn't ever been in a turbo car. But then again you wouldn't understand what i'm trying to say because knew everything when you were born.

He is asking a legit question regarding the use of a turbo. Don't hammer him for it, just cuz you think it's stupid for some reason. I bet a lot of turbo owners though this before they knew exactly what everything was about... You're one of the reasons people don't ask more questions regarding the use of something, and end up going and blowing their engine b/c of ignorance.

like these guys said. my friend has a 1.5turbo (yes a 1.5 sohc its cool its different) anyway when he trys go go up hills u see the boost go up ahah. no torque on that little bastard. but with an LS youll be fine. i have no probs with my h23 . @80 im at 4100rpm

Actually, I don't need to be WOT to see upwards 5 PSI at 2500 RPM. Cruising around at 2500, I'm between 10 and 15 in hg of vacuum, but going up a hill quickly brings the boost, and again, it's not WOT. I have a tiny turbo setup designed for low/ midrange power for the autocross and daily driving.

yup, turbo's spool based on exhaust gas output, and when at cruise the ECU is aggressive on it's fuel to help with gas mileage, but once you have to push the accelerator more to attain the same speed, you're using more effective power out of ur engine, therefore boost may come online (if turbo) which makes for very nice part throttle performance =]

i already forgot what this thread was about, is it about a turbo ls or making fun of someone for asking a question? any way what kind of horsepower are you looking to get out of your LS? is it LSvtec or just LS? what are your goals with the car?

the engine jsut has to have some load on it.. at 100mph if your on a flat surface, the turbo will be spinning from exhaust but not really creating boost until you create a load of some sort..

at freeway speeds.. say 4k and you slam it down a gear and nail it to the floor.. i can garauntee you'll be in full boost in a fraction of a second..

SimonsTeg, here is the best part.

You will get better gas mileage. Yes, you will.

On the freeway the engine does not ahve to work as hard to keep the car moving since the positive pressure is there at the TB all the time. You will have to press the gas pedal very lightly and passing is easy as hell.

I saw this kind of change:

Before turbo: 35mpg was the best ever.
After turbo: 39 mpg on last trip, pretty consistent 36 mpg with freeway driving.

Now, on the street, that is a different matter. At a local autocross I got 16 mpg

Turbos' are efficient enough to increase your gas mileage. I love that sticker though.

thanx for everyone's input. as far as my goals for the turbo set-up, i just want some more power so that i can give a little surprise whenever i get some idiot in a in a mustang, or some guys in their all mighty vtec monster revving at me laughing. i'm just tired of being the one that boosts someone else's ego cus i have to turn down a race or get totally humiliated when i do accept a race. it'd be nice to say i wanna run 13's on 10lbs. of boost but i doubt that. whatever i get should be better than stock.
