Is a FMIC necessary if im only making like 250 hp?
Hello all, I am thinking about doing a b16a2 turbo once I get one swapped into my car(92 civic si), I am just wondering if it is really necessary to mount one of the huge intercoolers if you are only going to be making 250-300 hp or can I use say a eclipse side mount intercooler or covert my old top mount rx7 intercooler(has a black coating) into a like half front mount? I am trying to keep the profile low of my car so no one jacks it and so it doesn't draw too much attention?

FMIC would be better obviously, but if you dont want to spend the money the side mount would work just fine. Those cheap bosch bov's are really quiet too if you dont want to get noticed.

Yea, SMIC do heatsoak if you drive hard. It isn't really noticeable until you all of a sudden are getting pulled by a car you usually kill. I've got the stock SMIC on my S13 SR20DET, and was doing an open track day. At about 9psi and 210rwhp(on the dyno with the I/C heatsoaked and no fan on it) I was KILLING all kinds of 993 P-cars, E36 M3's and whatnot while it was lightly raining(no heatsoak). When it was dry and hot, I was getting my *** straight walked down the back straight by the same cars. Probably a 10-15hp difference or so across the whole rev range, and that's a big difference.
It was enough to make me get a FMIC *IMMEDIATELY*. So my advice, get one of those small JRC FMIC's, like 6" high, and give it a VERY light coat of black paint if you want to keep a low profile. Won't be noticeable at all with your bumper installed. A SMIC is just a POS for performance no matter how you slice it.

Re: Is a FMIC necessary if im only making like 250 hp? (Def)
Alrighty so I guess a front mount is somewhat necessary then. If I did a sidemount I would cut out the little fake brake duct and make some sort of ducting
for it. But by the time I did that it would probably be obnoxious. And as far as the blow off valve I was planning on venting into the intake track before the turbo like most stock blow off valves do to quiet it down somewhat. But Thanks for the feedback... it was greatly appreciated. Also is there anyplace I can get a decent front mount for relativly cheap? anywhere from 50 to 300 dollars? I know 50 is cheap but whatever...Used, new?
Thanks a ton, Steve
