Default First steps to upgrade a stock 91 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD?

My stepfather finally caught the bug (I think) and I convinced him to start lookin at parts for his beautiful TSi. Now, he wants to have the turbo rebuit cause its 11 years old and prolly needs it anyway, however ive heard that a Lancer Evo turbo bolts right in and is larger. That true? Anyway, Im more of a N\A guy and dont know much about the first steps in FI power. Any tips?

Thanks fellas,
-Nick-

first things first, GAUGES! stock boost gauge sucks... insted of rebuilding the stock turbo just buy a 16g, same price, more power then do fuel pump.. then 3in thermal, then 2.5 in downpipe.. and Intercooler pipes and should be set

Check out dsm.org. Also you can go to any of the major vendors pages for staged mods. for ex. buschurracing.com He has a great staged upgrades page

Check out the articles in the last few issues of Turbo magazine. They have been building a Galant VR-4 which is your exact setup.

This is what I would suggest in this order:

Boost gauge.
ACT 2600# clutch (a MUST HAVE with an AWD, might as well get it out of the way)
K&N with cut air can.
Downpipe (stick with 2.5" unless you plan on making mare than 450hp)
Testpipe (2.5")
Exhaust (2.5")
Manual boost controller
With the stock fuel system you can crank 16psi (vs. 10-11psi stock)
Upgrade fuel pump and injectors and fuel pressure regulator
With fuel upgrades you can crank to 19psi safely
Start saving for front mounted intercooler (The best: Indy Race Cores) and bigger turbo.

So definately go with a new 16g or 18g turbo instead of the rebuild?

I would wait and not get a turbo upgrade until some of the other things are done first. If you put a Big 16G or 20G on this thing with out the other stuff, you are just wasting money. You won't be able to extract the extra horsepower out of the deal.

Please, for the sake of all that is holy, listen to me. i do have experience in this sort of thing.

i used to own a galant vr-4 and i can tell you that dsm's are beasts. one of the best ever made production cars.

think about 200hp, awd technology available back in late 1989. that's just unreal.

first thing he needs to do is a tune-up.
make sure all belts have been done/tensioner,
o2 sensor
magnecor wires
spark plugs

first mod up is a k&n filter, $45 and removbe he silencer, honeycomb, can
then comes the 3inch exhaust
then comes the test-pipe and down pipe (3inch if he wants a hard core turbo, 2.5 if moderate), he will have boost creep with a full 3 inch turbo-back exhaust
then up the boost with a fuel pump, boost guage, manual controller
then he's ready to rock for a bigger turbo
internal gated turbos are great bang for the money, 16g (people have easily gone low 12's), big 16g (top end),
any external gated turbos and a vpc is highly recommended (rids of the MAS)
then comes the fmic and the rest is history

no turbo honda, no matter how much hp they're pulling will keep up with an awd dsm on the street in the quarter mile. an 11 second honda at the track equals to a 12 second car on the street.

a low 12 second dsm is a low 12 second dsm on the street

the act2600 is rough only tranny and driveline.
make sure the transfer recall has been performed.

happy boosting to your step-dad.

put the car on a diet, like a 1000lbs worth to start, that AWD is wicked but drains a lot of power from the added weight of the system. WWW.Magnusmotorsports.com have staged upgrades for that car in CAD dollars, guaranteed to save on the exchange alone.

This Magnus Motorsports is a ripoff. Good grief, $800 for a ACT 2600# clutch when Buschur sells it for $400. And we know Buschur is expensive!

Ross Racing Pistons for $1000 friggin' dollars!!!!! Call Ross Racing directly and get this shipped for $520!!!!

Cam Gears for $750?!?!?!?!?!?

$575 for SS valves?!? Full retail on other sites list for $16/each. That's what, $256?

Everything they sell seems to be double the retail price everywhere else!!!

Thanks, I did miss that. But, I do know this: Canadian to American exchange is not 2 for 1. So they are STILL overpriced.

I agree with the 2nd suggested upgrade path. The first one jumped the gun in a few areas. Check out http://www.Buschurracing.com for some decent prices and a good upgrade path. http://www.roadraceengineering.com has excellent prices as well. If you are looking for a turbo I would definatley suggest getting the 16g or big 16g without the turbine housing and just using the stock turbine housing from your current turbo. If you really wanna be up there with the big boys in terms of turbos check out http://www.Forcedperformance.com , their green turbo is quite literally the best streetable turbo for our cars. I would never even consider an 18g an option. No one in the DSM community uses them. As mentioned before I would definately suggest a tune-up. Also I would have him look into http://www.DSMtalk.com and register or at the very least just read for a while.
