Fell victim to the good ol' d16y8 oil pump failure... what to do now
So, let me preface this by saying my car wasn't boosted... yet. I was prepping everything for the install and today the oil pump simply let go without warning.
I was headed to get lunch when all of the sudden it felt like i was towing an elephant up a hill, motor didnt want to rev, made 0 power and then it started dying on decel. Pull over, get out and it sounds like a diesel truck. Horrible rod knock.
Motor had 187xxx on it, the weird thing is everytime I check the oil, the level is different. Its parked on a perfectly flat surface, and it's been sitting for hours. Hooked up my oil pressure gauge and it didn't even move, not one bit. It reads 0psi no matter what. Oil is basically glitter, cam is scarred pretty bad.
I'm currently debating.... Find a z6 motor, get it setup for obd2, build it and drop it in (97 ex, btw) Or go ls.... I have everything here except for a shortblock.
Every honda I've ever owned has had vtec, from this car, to my 2.0 ls/vtec fully built em1. I'm not sure how I feel about not having a car with vtec.
Any advice before I pull the trigger? Cost wise, the ls would be cheaper since I have most of the parts and y8's and z6's arent exactly cheap around atlanta.

I probably could, given we have the machine shop capacity to do it but would there be a market for it, as it wouldn't be cheap.
This car will be my mostly DD, so I want reliable power... Having to worry about grenading an oil pump everytime I go out is not something I want in the back of my head, hence the idea about he z6 and simply adapting it to obd2, since we still have yearly scan tests in GA.
Or I could go the tried, true, and cheap ls route... and have virtually 0 of the d16 issues. Plus remember I can sell off most of the D16 stuff I have now to fund the build

try to find a z6 or a6 crank. use that instead of the Y series cam
cheapest way to get back up and running is to find a good y7 bottom end and swap that in. reuse the y8 head if its still an option.

what kind of costs are you looking at? are you using a jdm engine or rebuilding something?
it's really all about dollars. jdm wise the gsr is probably the best bang for your buck

Re: Fell victim to the good ol' d16y8 oil pump failure... what to do now
yea, with 187 on the clock I'm not really bitching, I just figured it would give me a little warning before taking a complete and sudden **** on me.
I've searched myself to death and Ive found 505048489 people that says its the pump 5848568458 that say its the crank and 5949348738 people that says its a combo of both.
I know the oiling system on the y8 crank is lacking compared to the z6. I've also heard the z6 flows better from 5500 up and the y8 takes the cake below that, I saw one case where a guy lost 40hp up top, but gained 30 something downlow when he swapped from a z6 to y8 head.
I havent pulled the motor yet, but from what I can tell The whole thing is toast. The cam looks scorched, theres shavings in the head. I'm gonna drain the oil sometime this week. That will be the true test. Regardless, I'll probably start with a fresh motor anyways... Its not very cost effective to piece either together.
Mac, how do you think that gt37 would do on an ls? its either that or do my he351ve setup for giggles :D
