Feedback request: The use of Liberty Gears /OEM housing for turbo street car purpose
Does anyone have any experience running a oem gear set with Liberty Gears dog engagement set welded onto the oem gears? It’s a lot cheaper than the full dog box obviously.
Just looking for for some feedback on people who have ran this setup on higher hp ~800whp.
Thanks!

Honestly this would likely have better responses in the drag racing section. Although, i think it mite be slightly too early in the year before they start heavily posting.
im sure AZ CIVIC has and answer for you though.

Understood, I don’t post much on here and didn’t think of that actually. Should I create a new post in that area or just have this one moved?

If you have 800whp you shouldnt be trying to cut corners in your transmission. The fact that our transmissions last at the power levels they do are a miracle already, and now you want to put a band aid on the issue to go even higher and think it might work. Doesnt sound like the right answer any way you slice it. If you want dog engagement for your factory gearset in a car that isnt already breaking gears then great. But welding dogs to factory gears which would definitely be breaking at 800whp sounds like a big waste of time and money to me. Of course the time and money are yours to waste so do as you wish... There is a reason people in that class spend the money on full gearsets, and it's not for the bling factor, that much I can tell you for sure. Otherwise it would be like all those show cars with "fully forged internals" that never actually do more than idle and get trailered around. They really are completely untouched internally but like to add on to their "mod list" because you cant physically check them on their bs being inside the motor

The Liberty Face Plated gear set did pretty good for me at the 700-800whp range, once I started to go above that I started to have problems. I broke second gear, then I broke the ring gear and cracked the bell housing.
I mean for $1100 bucks it did pretty good, it will outlast the stock gear sets for sure, if you break a gear it's not much to get a replacement but then you have to wait about 4 to 6 weeks unless you get spares made.
You can try it out and see how it does for you, I mean once I broke the ring gear and bell housing I moved on to the Liberty Billet Bell housing and PPG gearset and was able to sell my face plated gearset for like $1500 but I also had to cough up 9k.
You can always look into the real Liberty Gear Sets which are about $3900 or maybe find a used set or even a gforce gear set. Either way once you hit a certain power level you are pretty much forced to step up to a real gearset if you don't want to screw around with breaking things all the time.

I was previously making 600whp and I’m stepping up to a sleeved block this time around. I never had an issue with my transmission at that power level before, breaking gears or anything but I also don’t really bang gears like some people do and wasn’t making close to 800whp. I will be this time around though.
I was looking at the service because i personally never had an issue with oem gears/fd breaking. Thanks for the input this was what I was looking for. I think I will try it out, as it’s only $90 for a new gear to be fitted plus the cost of the oem gear itself. Not too bad in my opinion. The whole service runs $875, also pretty reasonable for what’s being done imo.

That will be a pretty fun setup and full throttle clutchless shifts will help you run faster as well.

Yeah when I was at the 600whp range I ran a CTR trans for years and never broke anything. If possible I would try and get some extra gears probably second and fourth and get them done as backups, but I think the Liberty Face Plated set does well for the 700-800whp range and if you are on Hondata save up and get the strain gauge option that is coming out.

So, great question, but there's little to know response or answer to it from at least this forum or group of enthusiasts..

Im trying to find a way to escape the 1000whp transmition cost since ill never get there and dear god not DOG
for daily.
I allways trusted albins gearset but still too much cost.

Re: Feedback request: The use of Liberty Gears /OEM housing for turbo street car purp
As for street use you can do it but it's not recommended because when you run 700-800whp you will also most likely be using a 5th gear cuff to help reduce gear separation. Try driving around on the freeways all the time in 4th gear LOL. I did it for about 2000 miles and it just got pretty annoying.
Again Shodan and I are always saying you have to look at your car and think about what you are really trying to do. If you want 700-800whp and plan on hitting a track stock gears won't last long so you have to make the decision on what you do next? You can buy a PPG gear set 1-5 and street drive that gear set, there are a lot of guys who don't necessarily drag race and opt to go with 1-5 but that is when you have to step up and spend the money for that $7,500 gear set. You can use that gear set to do double duty. Or you can take the chance and run stock gear sets which will probably do ok on the street but once you strap slicks on and push it hard at the track you WILL break gears.

Yes when you get the liberty face plated gear set you no longer run synchros, it eliminates them because you essentially have a dog box gear set, only you are utilizing your stock gears.

Power target will be decided and then will move on. Thanks anyway.

Im debating on this right now which way to go..Spend the money now or wait and spend it twice..Sucks that the PPG set cost as much as the car..

It is pretty sad, for the hell of it I was looking at some domestic setups and for the same price you can buy a pro stock trans capable of 4000 horsepower for the price of a PPG gearset.

Even with cuffing the 5 gear Mfactory 3.471 gives you drivable setup. First gear will be in the middle of 1-2 your new seconds will be in the middle of old 2-3 your new third is almost your old 4th and
your 4th gear is the same with the old 5th. On a 1.9 or 2.0 liter engine you wont bog too much on your new 1st imo even on stop lights. It will like having a B16 on 17s. B16 works just fine for me with 225/45r17 r888.
