Re: F23 Rebuild/Turbo Project
Well everyone, after about 1000 miles or so since the engine was rebuilt, I was finally able to get a re-tune after my initial break in tune. We also installed an electronic boost controller with boost by gear. The car's top run made 282hp. I would've liked to at least make 300 but oh well, I'll live with it. The turbo and manifold combination isn't the best and I know it's restricting my power. It absolutely drops off after 5000-6000rpm. Again I am new to boost, so I wanted to just ease into it, not blow my engine apart and not go crazy, having no experience. The car's extremely reliable which is what I wanted, as I have no plans to formally race it. In the future, I'd like to possibly buy a bigger turbo and have a custom made manifold which flows a bit better. Regardless, it sure is fun to drive with the boost set at 18psi!!
Just because I am curious how boost builds up, do you have any data on boost levels vs rpm?
Seems like your break-in tune was at 8-10 psi and 240 hp. With the extra 8-10 psi and nice 3" exhaust, I would have assumed more whp per psi.
The dyno does look like above about 4,500-5,000 there is something choking it a bit. At 18psi I wouldn't think the log manifold is the issue. I see others say they have gotten a fair amount more whp on the log manifold as well. I would think you could pick up some hp with a better manifold and downtube at the same boost level you are at, but doubt the log manifold is the main choke on higher rpm whp.
Have you seen any other F22 or F23s running the same turbo at similar boost levels? Seems like most of the ones I have seen have an AR of 0.57, or 0.63.
It seems hard for me to think that intercooler is the hold up at these hp levels, but I may be wrong. For the money I would think a larger intercooler couldn't hurt though.

I have a Bisimoto 1.2 cam and a stock intake manifold. From what I researched though, the stock F23 manifold should've been more than sufficient. I always heard the F22, although very similar, were pretty much good for what I was shooting for. A guy a few years ago, AFAccord, made 417hp on the stock manifold and only bored out the TB and had it plenum matched.

Re: F23 Rebuild/Turbo Project
Hello Honda-Tech world. Been awhile since I've posted. Just out of curiosity, what synthetic oil is everyone running. It's been about 1000 miles since my last oil change so I'd like to do one soon and with only about 2000 miles on the new engine, I'm thinking of switching it up. I used Castrol Syntec 50W-20 faithfully since I bought the car 13 years ago with 53K miles on it up until rebuilding the engine at 188K miles and never had issues. Considering now the engine is built and I'm running boost, I know the right oil is quite important to the health and longevity of the internals. The first oil change I did after my "break in" period was Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 however after a quite a bit of research on the topic, I've heard really good things about the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum line as well as the Shell Rotella T6 5W-40. Can I get everyone's thoughts on their oil choices? Thanks in advance.

In for this as well. Im currently on Honda genuine full synthetic 10w-30 because it was actually cheaper then the local auto parts store and I figured Honda wouldn't use crap oil.
Ive been recommended rotella by my tuner but have not made the switch quite yet waiting until my oil needs to be changed.

Re: F23 Rebuild/Turbo Project
So I just got my first oil analysis back from Blackstone and aside from them putting down the wrong engine type, it appears things look pretty good and healthy in my engine which only has about 2500 since the rebuild. Oil was changed at ~1200 miles and was Pennzoil Platinum 5W30. If anyone can chime in with their opinions, I'd appreciate any insight.

Good. Finished up about a year ago! Have only put maybe 2000 miles on it since. Still running great. Had to change out a few things, upgraded radiator fan, small things here and there. So far so good! Still a pleasure to drive.
