Exhaust under fuel tank
Is it safe to run the exhaust pipe just beneath the fuel tank..I'm going to install a Hks dragger. instead of the pipe going around I would like to make it straight as possible..thnx..

considering youll probably bottom out w/the smallest road crown and create sparks, Id say no, its not safe. Poke a hole in there while its sparking, and you and your car are done for....

Re: Exhaust under fuel tank (mrdjay107)
See if any of the Ground Zero guys will post some pics of their exhaust - I think at least a few of them run straight 3" (maybe even 4" now??) down the center of their hatchbacks. It is beyond me how you can drive anywhere like this, but apparently it can be done (especially if you have a fuel cell). There is some jdm company that makes a catback that uses a single pipe back to the fuel tank, then the exhaust splits into two smaller diameter tubes before going under the gas tank for added clearance. Who knows. Could make for an interesting fireworks show though like Cody said

Re: Exhaust under fuel tank (mrdjay107)
wait before you say no to it...
i did the same thing... but when i did it i made sure i tucked it in as close to the lower tie bar as possible without touching, now if you dont have a lower tie bar you can get away with alot more.
as far as the gas tank, it wont hit it cause it hits my lower tie before the tank, plus theres a plastic shell around the gas tank....im not saying it cant ever happen.
so far i like it...wether or not it made me gooobs of HP i dont know...
as far as scrapping yes i do a bit and i do mean a bit...normal driving it only scraps on speed bumps a bit....
buttttt if i go canyon racing, then it scrapes a bit more and when i say a bit more, i mean the guys at the top waiting can see me doing my run cause of the sparks....
ill have to take a pic of it...
i personally like it, as far as doing 3 inch i want to do it with the turbo setup, but i have no idea how thats gona work cause 2.25 already scrapes
and i havent busted a hole in it yet....had it for about a year now
and no its not .25 thick walled piping

Re: (FuzzyGreen)
i dont understand why not!! (sarcasm) i see people with their exhuasts done the apexi N1 style and the piping comes really close to the gastank. but for some odd reason its so popular everyone wants to have the muffler poking out at a fucked up angle because it looks kool. i am waiting to see some guy with a slammed car with a ricey N1 angled muffler and bottem out and punch a hole through the tank and then have sparks cause an explosion all because it looks cool.

What about using some of the oval exhaust pipe to gain some clearance. It is expensive but NASCAR and other racing orgs have used it.

Re: Exhaust under fuel tank (evoeone)
when you do this setup it wont be as scary as you think.
the lowest part of the car is always going to be the tires, and in the rear, where the gastank that everyone is so worried about is very close the the rear subframe, which is higher than the wheels, so when the car is driving its pivoting on that rear suspension so i dont actually hit near the gas tank at all. its where the exhaust makes the bend to come out of the tunnel and go under the tank that it hits, but there is about X" of clearence between the tank and the exhaust, and about 6" from where the exhaust actually hits to where the tank actually is.
UNLESS your rock crawling your honda and plann on slamming it on ODD elevations there is a very rare chance(in my eyes) that you would every have that section of the exhaust be pushed up, broken, and poke a hole in the gas tank. And even if you DID and you keep driving after you hear the violence that would cause this sort of series of events to occur, you probably shouldnt be driving a car in the first place.
the amount of force it would take to cause the exhasut to bend break and puncture the tank so great because the angle the exhaust would be sitting at, its almost impossible, it would more likley be flattened then break and puncture the tank.
im gona go to the shope right now, take some pictures and some measurements and post them...

Don't think like the people you are talking about . We are talking about minimizing the bends in the exhaust system for better flow, not for a certain look.
And now that I think about it, if your car explodes because of some under-car sparks or an open-downpipe flameout, then your fuel system probably needs some reworking hehe

atleast someone else doesnt automaticly shut it down, and comes up with a valid point

Re: Exhaust under fuel tank (mrdjay107)
why not just put a pipe with it bending towards the ground from the cat on....and just not run a muffler......end the exhaust system in the middle of the chassis you can always put a resonator of some sort on there. N1 is loud anyways....so i see no difference in not running a muffler or running it with it on there.....it's good and all but i'm sure you know what happens when an exhaust piping keeps rubbing against something....it slowly rubs a hole into it....if you want less bends....just have no bends and end your system with no muffler at all
