Exhaust for sohc turbo?
ok i'm lookin into getting an exhuast to replace my crappy ricer universal that was welded on. setup is d16z6 on greddy kit. now here are my choice right now:
- tanabe hyper medallion
- rsr old school
- custom from kteller
ok i'm pretty sure the tanabe and rsr are 60mm and ktellers piping will be 2.5 if i get it from him (i've already decided 3 is prob overkill for me). i've practically ruled out the hyper medallion as its a used item and i was really lookin for the super medallion. so scratch that off the list (unless i find a used super medallion).
now its between a used old-school rsr and the custom piping. i really like the quality of the rsr and i want something quiet too, so i'm still thinkin about it. my only reservations are that its like ~2.36" and not as big as the 2.5".
kteller's mandrel bends are quality too and should fit perfect but i still gotta get the seperate pipes and hangars welded. with that setup ill prob end up running a 2.5 es oval of magnaflow turbo.
both systems are stainless steel, mandrel bend, good fit. im thinking the custom will be louder but will perform better while the rsr will be quieter but have less gains (prob still more than stock tho)
what are your opinions. help me decide how to get that much closer to being poor
thanks

3" apexi n1 or 3" hks hiper or dragger
I would go with the custom from KTeller8. I don't know what the prices to have everything welded will be but I'll be finding out in the Summer.

Get a custom 3" from Mike (KTeller8). It is not overkill, 2.5" is "underkill" or not killing enough, whatever you want to call it. I went from a Tanabe RM to Mike's 3" with an es oval muffler, and it's a HUGE difference even with only 5psi boost. Turbo spools faster and it feels like the top end doesn't drop off.

i was considering 3 but i'm slightly worried about clearance issues. plus i think the stock greddy dp is like 2"? where can i find a 2 - 3" cat? more custom work i'm guessing. i know this is gonna end up more money the i have to spend....

Just get a reducer for your cat, they're only like $12. I bought one from my local muffler shop. How low is your car dropped? I have a 1.75" front and 1.5" drop back and I don't scrape. Just slow down for bumps and take them at a slight angle and you won't scrape.

I had an old school RS*R on my turbo SOHC. Its a great exhaust..but its just not big enough for a turbo. Low boost is really didnt matter much but when i was running high boost dropping the exhaust felt alot better.
Id recomend getting a 3" with a highflow 3" cat or a testpipe (if you dont care about the enviroment and/or have smog laws)
And yes the RS*R is 60mm (2.556inchs).

Re: Exhaust for sohc turbo? (liam821)
oh yea i forgot to say i'm running 7-8 psi.
originally i was thinking stock dp and cat with the custom ss 2.5 and 2.5 es.
this is probably the setup i can afford the most.
if i decide to got 3" piping with the 3" oval i will prob still have to stick with my stock cat and dp. this should still net gains until i can afford a hi-flow cat and new dp right?
the only thing that attracts me to the rsr is that its very quiet, which would be awesome for street. but i think i want that extra power as well.
so you think keeping the stock cat should be ok for now? where does the reducer go? after the cat before the new piping? thanks

Re: Exhaust for sohc turbo? (TheShocker)
yea i'm almost positive i'll get the 3 now but i wanna find out where the reducer goes and what sizes they're available in. i guess if i get piping now and keep stock cat i'll be needing 2-3? but then if i get a bigger cat afterwards, i'll have to toss it and get another one? or maybe i can just put it before the cat (if i get a 3-3) so that it'll go from my 2" dp to cat? will that work, just shifting it over to before the cat instead of after? damn i really wanna make up my mind so i can get this thing ordered. thanks for all the help guys

i got the kteller 3". its really bad-***. its a LOT lighter than i thought it would be too- easily half the weight of the stock system, and its twice the size.

Honda cat = turbo lagger device. With my old turbo setup i couldnt boost over 12psi with the honda cat. I could disconnect the wastegate (so it would never open) and at 12psi the exhaust back pressure was sooo great that it was force my wastegate open. The work around? plugged my wastegate back in, set my boost controller way down (8psi) and dropped the cat and exhaust. OMG i hig 16psi sooo fast it was insane (even with my old boost controller setting of 8psi) I turned it way way way down and back to 12psi. Spoolup time was sooo much faster. Talk about a difference.
