No, it's a manufacturer, like Garrett, Mitsubishi, KKK, Scwitzer, Holset, Turbonetics etc. etc. They manufacture their own turbos, and are most commonly used in OEM applications like the Subrau Impreza STi (Subaru has always used IHI, including the good, old 1800GL/Leone Turbo). Also, Apexi turbokits comes with IHI turbos. I also *think* IHI turbos are made in Japan.
EDIT: IHI IS Japanese, and "IHI" is short for "Ishikawajima Harima".

personally, for me its a great turbo. spools fast and doesnt put too much strain on the motor, its good to start out with in my opinion. better than no turbo

Good point. And you seem to understand how its going to perform, so more power to you.

I have been looking at this turbo (IHI RHB52) myself as an option simply because my sister's old probeGT turbo is now to the point of pointless to repair.... aparently someone has used this turbo before to the point that there is an adapter flange availible to mount the snail to a vx/hf manifold.

Hope it this helps, I haven't e-mailed the guy soI don't even know if he is still making them. good luck with it, I'm kinda releived to see someone else considering this turbo as well.

Ive got my own kit already all set up, i machined my own plate But if you dont have the resources to do that (i have a metals shop) then pre fabbed ones are the way to go

Do me a favor real quick, check to see if your wastegate actuator pushes or pulls on the wastegate. Thanks.

forums.probetalk.com then go into first gen performance. I believe some of those guys have gone low 13s on the stock turbo - but they are a 2.2 SOHC engine - almost ALL torque.
They are good to about 15 psi on that motor before they become inefficient but the lifespan is reduced at those levels. I believe stock is 11 psi on them. They produce good TQ numbers but fall off greatly above 5k rpms. This could be due to manifold, head etc design. there are some cool upgrades you can do using T Bird and RX-7 parts interally that will make them good to 300 whp with still no lag.
Good turbo for low-mid range D series.

D16y8 + ihi rbh5 VJ20 of mazda BP 1800cc turbo
440cc DSM injector + resistor box + VAFC Hack
FMIC @7 psi
no number yet but start spooling @ 2700 rpm - Max out abit above 4000 rpm.
it small enough to keep AC
but spooling so fast......good on city ride.....for long ride highway.......ummmm not sure.....

I have a IHI VF22 from a subaru STI on my zc sohc, turbo is ball bearing so it spools up quite nice and makes good power 245whp on 13psi. Hopefully have the car running again today.

I am personally using an IHI RHC7 turbo on my Built GSR setup, Just got everything in, mounts, fabricated DP, SpoolinPerformance manifold (FITMENT SUCKED *** FYI) ect ect ect. Anyway this turbo is T4, so a bit larger than what you have, but none-the less, IHI. Shooting for 500whp or so, should be fairly interesting power band, this turbo has a 61mm turbine and a 56mm Compressor inducer. Ill post up the dyno graph after my tuning appointment next week. I did a **** ton of looking around at these guys, really NO info at all out there, especially on my turbo. Had to search through the supra/ RX7 forums to find anything, but from what I have seen these are quality turbos, known for their very very strong wheels. Although the cost to repair them is QUITE high, so keep that in mind. Best of luck on your build.
