engine misfiring...help...pllleeeaaasssee
Ok, would a bad dist. rotor and/or cap cause the tach to bounce around all over the place, or would it just cause it to miss? Or, would missfiring, in general cause the tach to bounce around? I'm trying to diagnose this problem, the constantly bounces around, even sometimes when I'm idling! I know it could probably be the ignitor, but I wanna make sure that nothing else in the distributor could cause this. Because the money difference in repairs would be from $30 - $500, so I'm trying to keep it in the $30 range, since I am broke. thanks in advance
oh, my set up is 92 civic w/ drag turbo'd 97 LS, that is it.

a bad cap and rotor could do this but it sounds idfferent......does tyour car ever stall or have trouble starting? do you have an igniton box or all stock?

I've only seen that problem with failing ignitors and/or loose connections at the ignitor.

i bought some new sparkplug wires, but they're the APC ones. I was thinking it's the ignitor, but I have no problem starting the car, the car starts fine, it just misses a whole lot and the tach bounces all over the place, it is the stock tach, by the way. sooooo...what do you think?

I'd say check your grounds. The one from the valvecover to the chassis, and the one from the negative battery terminal to the chassis & tranny also. There's one more that connects to the thermostat area also (at least on 88-91's I've seen), might want to check there also. If it's not the grounds, it sounds an awful lot like an ignitor problem. I'd say do the free stuff first, if it doesn't work see if you can borrow an ignitor from someone for a few hours.
Good luck,

My friend is having a similiar problem....his stock tach is accurate and doesnt bounce around, but his Apexi tach goes all over the place around 4.5k rpms. what is the cause of the apexi bouncing all around? should i run a diode in line with the signal to the tach? i used the blue wire coming off the dist.
