Engine Block Cleaning
 

I have recently aqired a B16A Block it is still compleetly assembled with factory parts. I need to remove them. The block needs to be sleeved it has a severly gouged sleeve. Before I send to be sleeved since it has got oil crud and every thing else you can imagine on it , I need to clean it, since it is open and i dont want to use engine degreser and water and create rust in places I dont want what would you guys suggest I do about cleaning this nasty ol block? Is there any way you guys might have done it if in this situation? Any advice would be great thanks.

either use the gunk engine cleaner or send it out to a place that will hot tank it. sometimes the shop you will take it to to put the sleeves in will have a hot tank or know someone who can do it. its reasonably cheap and it saves you the hassle of try to get every thing clean.

dont most places ot tank teh block for u when u sent it in to be sleeved?

yes most places will hot tank it for you, although it might be extra. But its money well spent when you see a brand new looking block.

If you wanted to clean it yourself you could get some engine degreaser/cleaner and do it the hard way.

Can they hot tank aluminum blocks? Because i went to a machine shop to get my block hot tanked and he said they only hot tank iron block or something like that..

theres different hot tanks, some have chemicals that will eat away at aluminum and then theres ones that are safe to use with aluminum.

depends on the type they have.

You can't have your block hot tanked if you have GE sleeves.
Your block is aluminum so it isn't going to rust, except for the sleeves but that will be slight surface rust which will come off with a brillo pad.
Even after hot tanking older blocks aren't too sexy, just clean it well, use some degreaser, then paint it. You'll be much happier.

you can use gas and then rinse it off then just dry it with the air compressor, ive did that to my block 2 times this summer and it dosnt have any rust on it.
