Icon2 EG Hatch gsr turbo overheating

My friend has eg civic hatch with gsr motor and turbonetics turbo. His car overheats but only does it sometimes. He can drive it for upto an hour before it will overheat. The thermostat is not the problem. The fan comes on but I am not sure if it works all the time. The car runs great besides the overheating problem and does not smoke much. A couple of people are suggesting he does a head gasket. Does anyone have any other ideas?

thanks

Did you check the temp on top and bottom of the radiator check for flow if it's hot on top and could on bottom or vice versa then you may need a new radiator and get a block tester the tool with the blue liquid

if you do the headgasket i very strongly recommend you mill the head surface to clear up any warpage.

i would check to make sure the radiator is passing coolant through. you could also start by putting the fan on a switch or wiring it into the ignition switch so its always on to see if it helps.

i had a friend a while ago that had a turbo gsr that would run pretty hot. we wound up putting a 1600 cfm fan on a switch and it pretty much solved the problem. later on we come to find out there was a little hole in one of the hoses from the heater core to the motor.

have him datalog temps with both the bump on and bumper off. if everything stays in check with the bumper off then i would suggest getting a better fan with proper shroud. my car will overheat bad on hot summer days with the bumper on. added a spal 13" and will be making a shroud soon. dont expect to have any problems with that setup

HAVE HIM DO A LEAKDOWN TEST BEFORE ANYTHING.

is the turbo hybrid ? if so how are the lines being routed?
is when he goes in to boost ?

after an hour of driving is a little wierd considering most of are cars warm up to their maximum temp after 5 or 6 mins

we tried a new fan sensor, checked wiring for fan and flushing the radiator last night. everything looked to be working good. he let it warm up for about 5 minutes and than got about 2 miles down the road and the car heated up. when he pulled over the car temp. starting going back down while the car was idling. he let the car cool down and drove about 10 miles and he had to pull over again.

thanks for all replys

will the leak down test tell me if the head gasket is bad?

could it be the waterpump?

if its happening after 5-10 minutes then there is another problem like thermostat or air in the system. was it bled properly after the fan switch was replaced?

originally i was thinking the lack of airflow from the intercooler causing the car to heat-up on long drives.

I had a similar problem with my LS/Vtec turbo and when I pulled the head off to check the head gasket it was fine, wasn't warped or anything. Come to find out my valves were tapping the pistons. My Valves ended up getting bent in mine..

my car was overheating from the valves tapping on the pistons, they weren't bent at the time, when I took my head off and checked my headgasket I had seen where they had tapped at, just thought it might had been from where the car was out of time when I first got it together and put another headgasket on it and took it down the road and when it hit vtec it bent the valves.. it was the first time I actually went to the floor with it because I finally finished breaking the motor in. So that's what happened with mine, I was just saying because my car would run fine when I was just driving it around but when I would actually go a little more than half throttle it would start overheating, that's why I had checked my head gasket on mine.

well, since i just went through this, this is what i did....

new tstat...
hogged out tstat
new radiator
new head gasket
new 1400 cfm fan
2 new rad caps
drained system
water and water wetter only
new antifreeze

the headgasket was not the problem.

problem did not show until the temps outside were about 80 degrees, happened after 25 minutes of driving on the first nice day of spring. did all the above and car would still overheat....i was ready to pull the engine and put another in and tear old engine down to see if i could find something.

what it took to fix the problem....a combination of a couple things....
first was the fan....that helped alittle, car took another 20 minutes to heat up and get to 210ish....
at no time did car ever run over 210 degrees but i think that is too hot....want mine to run in the 185-195 range.

so i built a block off plate to try to force air over radiator.

as you can see there is still alittle area that is between radiator and block off. I plan to see that with a 1 inch water hose so it is rubber rubbing the radiator.

now prior to the block off plate intake temps were around 95-105....since adding the block off and fan i'm seeing intake temps of 120's. this is because my turbo inlet is right behind radiator and it is now sucking more hot air because the air is hot coming through radiator.
