The Effects of E85: Parts Test

Boost Works NY is doing some testing along with Tonio (on these boards). We want to solve all of the E85 rumors.
How will the fuel effect various car parts? What will it corrode? What wont it eat away at?

We started the test on 04/25/2010 at around 6PM EST
04/26/2010: No changes. Marked fuel level to record evaporation.
04/27/2010: Slight fuel evaporation. No appearance changes to any parts.

We have several parts submerged in E85 and we will be recording (and posting) the effects, if any.

This is the list of the parts we have

1.5" Sch 10 Pipe 304L Stainless Steel Elbow
1.5" 316L Stainless Steel Tubing
3/8" Heater Hose
Arias Forged Piston
Steel Braided Fuel Hose
Nylon Braided Fuel Hose
Electrical Tape
Various Anodized Fuel Fittings (used & new)
1/4" Nylon Tubing
Brass NPT to Barb Fitting
Injector O-Rings
Stainless Steel Filler Rod
Aluminum Filler Rod
12 Gauge Wire
18 Gauge Wire (some copper exposed)
U.S. Quarter
Mild Steel Washer
NGK Iridium Spark Plug
Hose Clamp
-4 AN Steel Braided Hose
Aeromotive Fuel Filter
Scion tC OEM Fuel Rail (half)
Scion tC OEM Fuel Pump

X2. Have a buddy who had injectors clog/fail after sitting around for a couple months post-E85 use. He just found them that way, it wasn't a controlled test. Also interested in the results.

No set time. Until we see results. Could be years

I'm interested to see the results as i'm daily driving my car on E85. I have yet to have any issues with it....**fingers crossed**

Re: The Effects of E85: Parts Test

We ran a car on it last year for about 3 months.
Dual Walbros (one inline), stainless fuel line, aeromotive regulator, golden eagle rail.
ALL of the parts were perfectly fine but the car began giving us a bad misfire under mid to heavy load.
After tearing the engine down we found A LOT of carbon buildup on the exhaust valves. We believe this caused the misfires.

I think the first thing that will fail is gonna be the cake pan that's holding everything. I'm starting a build thread soon. I'm going to be running on the same local E85 as above. We shall see what happens.

keep adding fuel.... it evaporates quickly....

the tape and anything plastic or rubber may die...

but they would also **** up on 93 or c16 etc....

great thread!!!!!!!

Good work guys

Might I suggest adding some sections of OEM Metal Fuel Line and maybe an OEM Fuel Filter to the mix...

In to see what that Arias piston looks like my new motor has them but they are coated.

When I tore my last motor down I did not find any "Carbon Deposits" but I did find a good bit of chalky white powder on my exhaust valve stems.

Then pan is pretty full haha

Plus I dont think anyone would be using OEM fuel lines with E85

I am! With no issues i might add...but we'll see how long that lasts :P

...i've been running E85 on the stock lines since June of last year (and that includes driving it all winter on ~E70)

Re: The Effects of E85: Parts Test

I definately know of a few running all stock stuff (lines, filter etc) and at one time I used my stock feed as my return so I did it for a while as well.

In for results. How often are you going to check the parts to document any changes?

boostworksny 04-26-2010 01:45 PM

Re: The Effects of E85: Parts Test

Will be checked daily.
