EE Major's, I NEED U .. Boost Controller w/ LED's
Hey guy's I'm going to need some insight on this little DIY project.
Purpose: To learn about LED's/resistors/diodes and to have a visual display if I'm in high boost or low boost via and LED display then future plans are to integrate this to a dual 7 segment display.
My Setup:
I have a Turbo XS Dual stage boost controller, see the diagram below.
I would like to have an LED illuminated when I'm in low boost (green), and then when I hit the switch, have another LED turn on when I'm in high boost (red).
Does anyone have any idea how to do this? I went to Radio Shack and got some LED's with a built in resistors and I can't seem to grasp it. I know the LED needs a ground and a power source, but the real trick is the switching of the correct LED. I don't know if I'll need some logic gates (i.e. AND, OR, NOT, etc).
Here are some links that I've been familiarizing myself with.
and once I get this done, I want to have a dual 7 segment display to say LO (for low boost) and HI (for high boost) but that's after I get the LED's figured out.

i need to understand the switch to draw you a schematic. is it SPST? does the switch light up with a led? trying to figure out the ground wire on the switch and what its for.

Re: EE Major's, I NEED U .. Boost Controller w/ LED's (Syner-G-Racing)
if you a have a chip burner to program a logic controller 7 series you can have it a seven segment display L or H. if not with a simple relay I can draw you a schematic for two leds. with that info on the switch. I can draw one for now with what i know.

Re: (Syner-G-Racing)
wow thanks guys,
OK I think the above might work, tell me if my logic is correct.
1. If the coil is not activated, 30 will always be connected to 87a
2. When current is applied to the coil, 30 is connected to 87 - the High boost is flipped.
Example
Once I get this working (hopefully today) I'd like everyones input for the 7 Segment display. I know we would need the pin out to see what contacts to give power to, etc.

Re: (FredoSP)
if you just want it to display L or H take pin F,E,D (for L) and wire them to 87a and F,E,G,B,C to 87. and the necessary volt for reference and ground etc.

yeah that's what I was going to do after I was sure that the 2 LED way worked first - plus radio shack was all out of 7 Segment Displays.
did you get my PM about how 87a will get power?

Re: (FredoSP)
Do you suggest I add a diode on 87 or 87a wires?
and do I need some 1KΩ resistors to protect the segments' LED's right?

Re: (FredoSP)
its not necessary for the diodes...it will work with them if you would like to add them but you dont need them.
as for the 1k resistors. I didnt see any specs on the seven segment...but its safe to say that the amount of current that will be going to them will be to high, so I would say 1k to 1.5k should suffice. .012amps-.008amps.
actually just make sure you get the 12v series. they have resistors built in the intergrated circuit.

Re: EE Major's, I NEED U .. Boost Controller w/ LED's (xenocron)
interesting thread. I started learning a little about relays last year and wired a LED to let me know when my fan was running and also a vtec light to let me know that it was activating properly. Good Thread!

Yeah, I don't get that toggle switch. It's got 3 contacts as if it were a switch that lights up.

Hey guys
I didnt have a chance to find a relay that has 87a, I will keep you posted.

try a parts store like auto zone, car quest, checkers, advanced auto, pepboys, etc. ask for a five contact relay, Niehoff (BWD automotive) makes a good one part number RL35841.
if they dont know what your talking about. tell them their typicaly used for the big boom trucks and fork lifts, dump trucks etc. then they should know what you want.

Very nice idea...but not meaning this in a rude way, but why not find a used profec b spec I for like 180-200 bucks? Alot less hassle and better boost control IMO??

I already have a boost controller, and wanted a little DIY add on.
Most members who are in this forum are hands on/DIY people anyways

Re: EE Major's, I NEED U .. Boost Controller w/ LED's (FredoSP)
good stuff...youve inspired me to come up with something that I will have to accredit you for when I post the how-to. using the same concept except on a single boost controlled setup, green for vacuum, yellow for vacuum/boost transistion, and red for max boost. Ill be using a volumetric relay (it works off of vacuum and pressure instead of magnetisim). keep us posted on the project, as will I. feel free to PM me also.

Re: EE Major's, I NEED U .. Boost Controller w/ LED's (FredoSP)
im in search of it as we speak. Ive used them for automated machinery. Im trying to find one that isnt ridicuosly over rated for like 150psi ect. I will keep you updated. Youll find them at any type of industrial/electrical warehouse. most people refer to them as hydropneaumatic solenoids. Ill let you know as soon as I find one with in a reasonable price range. Im expecting about 18 bucks. spent.

Sweet...please let us know. I'm always up for cool light shows with LEDs
My car is a POS...but I do like LEDs for some reason.
I guess there is a little ricer in all of us in some way
