Default Dyno Day in CT @ Bristol Dyno 2/10/06 - HomeMadeTurbo Style, 5 cars w/ plots

Well, we had a long fun day at the dyno in East Hartford, CT @ Bristol Dyno (www.bristoldyno.com).

5 Cars, all home made kits...coming down to the wire for most of them getting there setups done the night before.

We had Josh, aka Hotrex, aka CC_Fab with his piston/rod, stock sleeve B16a and GT35r turbo. Shooting for 400hp on the day and coming extremely close at 389hp/270tq @ around 20 psi on pump gas.

Dan (Quicksilvia) with his ugly step child B20 head / B18 block stock everything, SS Autocrap Turbo Kit. He kept telling me to up the boost but this motor was definitely hurting.

Dave with his clean white GSR, a very nice car indeed. Inline Pro mani, SC61 and 3" downpipe. At 9psi he made a respectable 256hp.

Next was Mike who finished his setup the night before at near midnight. LS/Vtec with a Borg Warner GM8 junkyard turbo. I'm not sure if his injectors or fuel pump couldnt keep up but this thing kept going way too lean over 5800 rpms and couldnt be tuned to it full potential. At only 8-9psi though and not revving to its full potential...this thing has some 'umph' left in it.

Lastly, well first and last...was Jordan. Jordan went on the dyno 1st and after tuning partial throttle and starting on the boost, developed a vacuum leak somewhere near the intake manifold. We pulled the car off the dyno and they went to replacing the IM gasket and actually found out an injector seal was the problem and reseated that as well. Throwing the car back on the dyno last, everything I had tuned part throttle seemed to be drastically changed from earlier so that had to be redone. On the last pull though unfortunately, 2 sleeves popped and literally exploded the upper radiator hose and every drop of coolant in the system all over every spectator and every car that was inside of the building...not a pretty sight. His last dyno plot before the carnage...

More pics...

Dave's clean GSR

Josh's B16 Integra

CC-Fab's 'Party Girl' Manifold

Poor kid...dont fall asleep at the dyno fellas!

The aftermath...

I think the people that took videos are still editing them...there is one posted on HMT already though.

did you not see it was only revved to 6.5k? jordans car looks like it was on its way to 400whp, and the b16 integra has a 7.9:1 comp ratio

You can see that the pull was let out of at 6500. He probbaly didn't want to damage the engine before figuring out the issue. Why push something that isn't right?

Xenocron,

What caused the sleeve failure? How did the owner take it? I've yet to have an issue like that while tuning a vehicle but, I'm always scared since you never know what the engine has been through in the past.

It took 20 psi from a GT35R to make 390 WHP? Is that a typo?

No.This is a stock bore 7.9:1 comp ratio B16 with stock cams, intake manifold etc.I really wouldnt expect much more.Looks like a good time to bad about the sleeves.

There was a b16 around this area not too long ago that i believe took about 20psi on a gt35 to make 400whp. I think he had lower cr too.

I have known all of these guys for quite a while...and the owner of the car Jordan, I'm sure was really bummed about what happened. He left me a message today that #2 and #3 went, apparantly at the same time. There were no audible signs of detonation and the plugs read clean. He said that looking at the other cylinders, piston to wall clearances seemed very large, compared to prior motors he has built so it could be that...

The goals for the day were for both Hotrex and Mahcivic to break the 400 mark, everyone thought Jordan had a much better shot than Josh but right from the start you could tell there was something off as he had definte signs of piston slap...when cold and somewhat even after being warmed up. I think most everyone there thought the initial lack of power was do to the air leak.

Yes, Josh's B16 does seem a tad weak compared to some others posted here before, but this was on pump, and everything was very stock except for the pistons, rods and devcon block...which stayed VERY cool even on the dyno which was a pleasant surprise.

The other not-surprisingly hard part of this whole day was that 5 cars had to be done in one day...the most I had ever done before that was 3 street tunes in a day.

It looks like you guys had fun over there though. Even though not all the goals were reached, they are still respectable numbers for the setups at hand. You never know what the numbers are going to be like going from dyno to dyno, so comparing all the dynos together, I think they are about where they should be.

Too bad about Jordans car too, would've liked to see that over 400.

yes the teg is mine, it was a 81.5mm gsr, with rods and pistons, arp hardware, stock head, sc61, 3" turbo back and custom everything else made by me. ever since i started the motor up it seemes to have some slap to it, the machine shop kept telling me it was the valves but it clearly wasnt. the piston to wall clearance seems very large. the # 2 and 3 sleeves cracked all the way down and the #2 cracked in two places. luckly i have spare motor i can use for the time being and get another block put together. the tops of all the intake side cylinder walls seem to be pretty scuffed up too. im gonna not take it apart and bring it to the machine shop this week to see what they can tell me. i garuntee they will tell me to get lost but owell, guess its a reason to sleeve som, ething now

hmm. a sleeve wont crack due to the piston to wall clearance is too big.

excessive cylinder pressure caused that motor to blow.

id go back and look at the tune. unless the fuel pump or something couldnt hold and leaned out. but then it would have been the operators error not to catch it leaning out before it blew.

sucks, good luck on the rebuild

hey xenocron, tell the guy with the teg that had the coolant issue, to have his radiator checked for blockage, we had the same thing happen on a friends motor, and the fluid was never getting thru the block and it burst the hose

LOL, you beat me to it. + 20psi out of a GT35R and 380hp, wow...

People make that at just over half that amount of boost.

I would also like to see this 400horse b16 at 10psi, and the cars that were dynoed were on stock heads.

Actually, I said at just OVER half, meaning 12psi or so. And here... how about a 100% stock internal B16 with a less efficient turbo at 9psi:

Do the math, his numbers are low.
