Well, my dump tube broke off.... stainless steel welded to the flange. Hmmm!




WTF? I guess the heat cycles killed it. It broke off at turn 12 at Mid-Ohio (shrug).

Well, I got this MAP torch.... found a pipe that looks like it'll fit.....




Voila. Worst weld I've ever done. Well, first weld I've ever done.

Last year a few friends and I were heading down to Maryland for a VW show and his wastegate and dumptube were hanging (via the vacuum line), in the engine bay. His turbo manifold cracked and the wastegate flew right off , so it was pretty crazy.

Funny **** though.

That weld should hold up. Take it from me...the one on my downpipe flange to my downpipe is worse than that one!

I mean, really, the tube weighs like 1 pound.... how much stress is on it (besides heat expansion/contraction)

This was a good place to practice welding. Can't see it anyway, the tube points down in the engine bay. If it breaks off, I run to Napa for another 5 dollar pipe and a fresh bottle of O2.

I had no idea you could weld with those propane tanks from home depot, Im gonna get a few and learn to weld. Where did you get the metal rods?

Remus 13, did he have a SSAutoChrome mani?

EDIT- it looks like your mixing those two gasses, are you? And what are they?

Nah man. This was on my friend's VW 2.0 Turbo. The manifold cracked and his car sounded like ***.

Go to home depot, they sell MAPP gas, Oxygen, little welding rods, a sparker and a torch thingy for... ummm... maybe $45, I bought it a while ago. It's all-in-one box.


Propane is too cool to weld with. MAPP gas is hotter, and the pure oxygen makes it super hot. It's mixed in the tip.

There really isn't any weight on it, just the weight of 14" of tube.

OFF TOPIC, but where did you get that external wastegate welded at? And how much? Just curious. It looks like quality work to me
