Dont warm turbocharged engine up? (VW related)
Well my mom just bought a 2003 turbo passat (pretty kickass little car) and i was going through the manual and it says NOT to warm the car up or cool it down
the wording was this "to prevent premature wear and tear on the engine do not idle the car to warm it up, once you start the car you should be ready to go"
now that confused me because i was always told to warm and cool a turbocharged engine.
anyone know why? VW have a diffrent oiling system? im confused...

the most probable reason for this is that the oil pump probably does not flow optimally at idle, and prolonged idling can lead to engine wear over a long period of time.

but what about boosting with the engine still cold!
the damn turbo spools at like 1800rpm its not like you cant stay out of boost

I drive all the time without boosting, just ease off the pedal and find the median were it wont boost. Its not hard.

factory turbocharged engines are foreign to most of us
Are the VW's turbos watercooled as well?

You can't tell if VWs are turbocharged or not, cause you need a microscope to find the turbine.

One side note, Golfs can be fairly fast with the right stuff.

I said this before and people made fun of me....
Leaving some cars set at idle and 'warm' up washes away cylinder walls/rings
Best way to warm a car up is drive it out of boost till like 3k until it warms.

well i can understand the reasons for not letting it warm up but what about the cooldown? Why wont the oil begin to coke in the turbo?

Re: Dont warm turbocharged engine up? (blufke)
I have to let mine warm up or there is a gas smelling substance that will collect in the intake manifold and make the car smoke. Its done it the only time I ever just got in without warming it up and drove, and it smoked untill I shut it off, let it sit overnight and started it and warmed it up. So I don't see the point in NOT warming it up. Maybe the fact that the volvo is water cooled means a difference?

lol, damn if I knew cars came turbocharged from the factory I woulda sold my civic and bought one! lol

"Don't idle the car to warm it up."
The part they neglect to say is "Drive 'normally' to allow faster warm-up."
Engines warm up faster when they're being driven! And you get better mileage when accelerating "briskly" to your target speed... according to studies by BMW. Keeps the engine in its desired operating range for a longer time.

i opened the hood at the dealership and was looking for it, and thought "good lord the intake port on my t3/t4 was the size of that turbine, it needs an upgrade!"

I don't know about warm up but for the cool dow I know why they say not to. The new VW turbos have an electric pump that keeps pumping oil through the turbo after the engine has been turned off. Pretty cool if you ask me, no need for a timer. I know this because I have owned two 1.8Ts(wife's car)

Re: Dont warm turbocharged engine up? (LS-hatch)
well some of this sounds funny because i have always let my car warm up and when ever i didn't i wouldn't boost till it was. So answer this if i let my car warm up for 15 min. before i drive it every day am i hurting something?

Re: Dont warm turbocharged engine up? (spooled b16)
I wouldn't go so far as to say you're hurting anything. But the engine will definitely warm up faster if you drive easily rather than do the idle warm-up.

That is a bold statement that is incorrect . They can run 13's with just bolt ons (i.e intake/downpipe/exhaust/chip/boost controller) plus those engines are bulletproof. I would almost say comparable to the 4g63 but they suffer from tranny issues and weird electrical problems as well . Nonetheless 1.8t Vdubs are no slouches.

im willing to bet because its an electric pump it pumps MORE oil through when the car is first started to get the flow going.
