does h22+turbo+auto tensioner spell DISASTER???
how many people with turbo h22's went ahead a did a auto to manual tensioner conversion???
just want to know if it is popular in the turbo world...
and if not....
... is it common to see a turbo h22 motor fail due to the auto tensioner crapping out???

It's not really a matter of Turbo or NA, it's a matter of the autotensioner failing in general.
There was a recall on the old tensioner as it would stop working over time. There seems to be some people who have had there's fail but not a huge amount from what I have seen on here.
Generally the biggest thing is when upgrading to aftermarket cams the autotensioners seems to really become a problem.
I changed mine to the manual tensioner when I built my motor just as a nice safe guard, and to make it easier to work on then the auto one. For the few $ it costs it's worth the insurance IMHO.

Im swapping over to auto to manual tensioner and i have a turbo h22. Just hearing about the failures on autotensioners is scary especially with a turbo car.

yeah, its not a matter of turbo or not..... the **** will break, swap to the manual tensioner just for piece of mind. i put 100k miles on my orignal auto tensioner and reused it several times... but one of my friends only drove his car for about a week before it failed...

the auto tensioner only tensions the belt and then you lock down the pulley nut. the tensioner only sets the tension. the pulley nut holds it in tension from then on.

The Auto tensioners suck. I had 3 of them break on me while driving. The motor was stock at the time. Go manual.
