Do you guys dyno with slicks on?
Just curious...i run 17" rims on the street and 15" slicks at the track...
would this make any difference at all in tuning? any change in tires would change final drive right?

this sounds like a dumb topic but I'll address your ratio question. Use whatever wheel/tire set helps you get closer to a 1:1 for dyno... this may be 3rd or 4th, not familiar w/ your tranny

it really doesnt matter, you can use 3rd or 4th, the power output is usually about the same. The important thing is to maintain traction on the dyno, as well as to be as consistant as possible with water temps, intake temps, etc.

i was only curious because race cars generally dyno with slicks on. but i'm assuming that it's because slicks is the only type of tire they ever use

Thats not true about race cars dynoing with slicks. I never dyno with slicks with my race car. I use a set of 15 inch racing sparcos with 195/50 series tires. Power output in 3rd and 4th gear will differ. On a car that makes good power....all motor of turbo, you will always see higher hp output because of holding it in gear longer.....Mike

4th gear is close to 1.0 yes but you forget it has to go thru the FD which is 4.4
generally. You cant get 1:1 ever. It doesnt matter either.

Well what is the formula for finding the gear ratio with a certain diameter wheel?

I don't see why 3rd or 4th matters, the dyno knows engine rpm and effective speed so it knows what your gearing is... that's how it calculates torque.
3rd is just nicer on your motor but you won't get as much resolution.
