Do I need more ignition for my 400whp SOHC???
its a d16z6 built by JE. here is a short description. Fully ported head, over-sized valves, 3 angle valve job, titanium retainers, crower turbo cam, AEM ajustable cam gear, copper head gasket, JE pistons, block gaurd, billet rods, balenced and blueprinted, too much to list.
got a big t3/t04e and would like to hit 400whp and some 11's. got a zex dry kit that im gonna slap on it to spray in the ic when needed So far im gonna tune uberdata as far as i can and hope i can make it. I figure on winding out the motor to like 8000-8500 rpm. depends where i make power.
So how far can the stock ignition take me. should i upgrade and if to, to what??
Thanks
Burke

I dont really know for 400whp, but i made 343whp on stock ignition with a plug gap of 24 thousands.
I just recently bought a MSD Digital 6+ and that is what i will be using to fire my car at 450whp, and i will have a 2 step now also

I paid $279 for the Box through Summit racing.
I am currently using some Accel Thundersports, but i am looking into getting a set of magnecores or MSD wires.

I use MSD as well on my SOHC setup. You can get the MSD 6a box for like $140 I think.
Brian, I have magnecores and like them. They also made me a custom wire for the coil for like $8.

Re: (ladysman)
We get a lot of STOCK B series motors coming in for turbo installs and tuning, just about all of them make less power (on an internally stock motor we normally only run 7-9lbs.) 300-350whp max and run aftermarket ignitions... I just talked to CheezeFrog (Cary) the other day about his old EJ6, he said it was running a stock ignition just fine (making ~400whp)... Most of our customers may not need aftermarket ignitions but we leave the choice up to them... I'm sure they would run fine without it but you'll definately know when you need it... Brian just has a HVC box/coil in his car and once he hit ~550whp it would start blowing out the spark... We normally gap ~0.024-0.028", I would definately recommend the MSD Digi 6 and 7 boxes, everything is integrated and it stays a lot cleaner (just what I like)... Good Luck
