DIY Cam gear keyway?
I recently bought a turbo cam for my Y8 and the keyway is different on the new cam and the OEM cam gear as seen in the pics below. How safe is it to make a new key and grind down and slot the OEM cam gear to make it work? And can I use aluminum to make a new key?

Re: DIY Cam gear keyway?
It makes more sense to notch the camgear so if you mess up its no big deal, but I think that would be harder.
If it was me, I would take my dremel with one of the cutting blades and turn it sideways and grind the front edge in the cam key slot down just a bit. Then the camgear will slide right on.

the only issue with that is the key on the cam gear is small and would have little surface to grab the cam...thats why i thought about going the other way? It hard to tell from the pics but the half moon slot in the cam is deeper than the cam gear key.

I meant grind the front of the slot on the cam down so that its not a bowl shape and more straight at the front. Then it would work just fine.

I edit my post just as you were posting.

I'd grind down the key way so it fits, then drill a new hole in the cam/ cam gear and use a piece of steel rod for a second key way.

IF you WERE going to attempt making a new key no way would I use aluminum! I have seen stock metal ones strip and with aluminum being A LOT softer you take the chance at a lot of damage.
Why not just get an aftermarket cam gear also?
BTW who makes that cam??

Re: DIY Cam gear keyway?
I would get a cam gear for that cam. I had a car come in that had the same type of cam that some one made the stock gear fit, It broke the key way on the gear and bent valves no fun. Would of been fine with a aftermarket gear and the correct key way. If it was me i would spend the extra cash and make it right, also you can make power with cam gear adjustments!
