Default Discussion Topic: Tell us about your favorite turbocharger and why

for all the new people, rate your favorite multi purpose or specific turbo.
for myself i fall on somwhere between the garrett 50trim and the bw256.

although, the last few years ive notice theres alot of custom units that can equally do as others and better. whats your take.

My take would be a double one - What? Huh? This thread is like asking "What's your favorite tool to use to work on... stuff."

You can't possibly choose one single turbo, or even a couple turbos as a do all. Every build will have a specific purpose (even if that is to do almost anything) and the turbo will need to be selected based on that purpose. The engine size, to the power goals, powerband desired, room or fitment, etc. will greatly change what turbo can even be run in the first place.

So if this doesn't get locked, people really should include the engine setup and purpose, not just some random turbo while saying "Yeah, that's my jam!"...

lol This thread is kind of silly. My "favorite" turbo would change depending on what car its going on. Not so much a qualitative property, buy a quantitative one

truthfully i was kinda messing with wantboost lol. he has a crazy list of snails. his reply would help certain individuals on turbo selection. cant remember what he said his jam was though. do believe i said multi purpose or turbo for specifically one thing, like drag or highway. maybe it wasnt worded basic enough

My favorite turbo is whatever turbo gets me down the quarter mile faster. I have always used Garrett but now am on Comp which got me in the 9's at 23PSI and hopefully faster this Fall.

My favorite Turbo is AWESOME...

But he's my dog so none of you probably care about that.

Lol I heard my name?

In reality a "favorite" turbo depends entirely on the users preference in terms of power levels, purpose of the build, and what kind of powerband they want.

My choices for a practical "street" car (read 300-550hp) power level depending, are the following for 1.8-2.0l engines.

GT2871R-GT3071R (400-500ish)
STC Hunter (53lb/min)
STC Silver Surfer mk3 (59lb/min)
STC TR30R
GT(X)2860R (sub 400hp with quick response and broad power)
EFR 7163 (perfect all around turbo IMO, compressor flows up to 60lb/min but responds faster than a 3071R)
TD05HR-16G6 (twin scroll, perfect for an uber-responsive build up to 375hp or so, plentiful aftermarket support in terms of upgrades, requires custom manifold though)
TD05H-18G/TD06SL2-20G (these are highly efficient turbos, the 18G is good over 350 and the 20G is a solid 450hp turbo with the cast compressor wheel)
T3/T04E 50 trim (the all around turbo for those on a budget that still want quality, proven over 400hp with decent response all at an economical price)

Obviously other factors are important like turbo manifold design, proper turbo sizing, how aggressive the tune is, fuel choice, water/methanol injection, pressure ratio (I've been noticing a trend where most Honda guys are afraid to run high pressure levels and would much rather run a larger turbo at lower pressures to make the same power a smaller turbo at high pressure would make with much slower response), engine specifics and efficiency, and so on.

Now my personal turbo collection is something like 23 strong but at the moment my personal builds are getting the following:

Accord F22A1- TD06SL2-20G. Motor will be 12:2 static on E85, head work, cam, K series RSP intake manifold, Forced Performance cast 4G63 turbo manifold (fits F series motors with a few holes slotted), 400hp minimum. Turbo is getting a billet extended tip compressor wheel, ported shroud TD06 compressor cover, possibly a 9 bladed lightweight turbine wheel. Compressor wheel has been proven to 601@30psi with a slightly larger TD06H turbine wheel and 14cm T3 turbine housing.

SVT Focus - modified GT2871R. Initially the stock motor will be boosted. 2l 10.2:1 static compression, somewhere between 300-400 initially depending on how the motor behaves and what the tuner thinks. Eventually I will build another motor... Higher compression ratio, forged internals, ported head, cams (head and cams might go on stock engine to see what happens), water/methanol injection (although I don't think the OEM plastic intake manifold will like it so I need to find an alternative). Turbo will be getting a billet extended tip wheel, ported shroud T04E compressor cover, ceramic bearing upgrade, STC Investment Cast turbine housing, SPA cast turbo manifold, TiAL 38MVS, etc.

Civic will likely run a Silver Surfer at 400-450ish. Initial motor is a stock sleeve rod/piston LSV. 10:1 static compression, Neukin mini ram, TiAL MVS, Stock port B16 head, GSC T1 cams, Skunk2 Pro IM (not sure on intake manifold yet... ITBs and a Skunk2 Ultra are being debated), Megasquirt 3 pro, coil on plug, flex fuel E85/93, PWR or Bell intercooler, and so on.

I'll be using this engine just to get the car running and shaken down as I'm building a 2 liter VTEC motor with Muckmans old block... 12:1-12.5:1 static, BME aluminum rods, reworked OEM 89mm crank or lightweight aftermarket 89mm crank, VTEC head, 4Piston or Endyn port work, whatever intake manifold I use on the other engine, JDL divided T3 manifold, E85/93, methanol injection, individual cylinder EGT/AFR, etc. 500+hp.

Once the "big" engine is done I'll pull the stock sleeve LSV out and save it for a dedicated track ****, probably a CRX due to their low curb weight when totally gutted.

Still not sure on what turbo my SR will get that's going in my S13 coupe. I have 2 choices for the 800+hp VG30DETT that I'll be putting in an S13 hatch.

I have a few more projects in the works if everything works out. Although it's not like I need additional projects but if could make the ones I'm looking at a certainty I would unload a few I have now. Although again if everything works out like it should I could have them all lol.

But again this whole "favorite" turbo thing is entirely subjective. Much like a persons favorite food, restaurant, hot and cold temperature, fast and slow, spicy food, right/wrong, good/bad, political party, religious beliefs, etc.

It's hard to narrow it down unless you were to base it solely upon the number of a certain turbocharger sold.

reading between the lines. lets be honest here, how many posters in this forum run turbo setups on primarily applications other than street.

so... whats your street jam. my experience is only limited to five different snails. out of the five, one did justice the most for me.

My 14B daily'd 11:1 B16 is fun. I don't run much pressure, 5/10lbs on toggle.

I roadcourse my car as well, 5lbs.

I drag fools who think I'm stock at 10lbs. When I'm feelin slow, I swap springs to do 10/15lbs on street.

40mpg @ 5lbs.

All they are, are thinner copied versions of Turbonetic's F1 series turbine wheels, which, to me, are the best part of Turbonetics.. So that makes you ok. You can think about them.
That, and their ability to realize when they make mistakes and improve themselves continually, while at the same time have the full resources to manufacture their own materials in house, and diversify their brand.

Fellow road course, Time Attack , hillclimb , turbo runner.. , with tiny doses of street monster capability.

The 2860RS has a crappy compressor map compared to the 2860R

as you can see the RS is slightly less efficient, has a much lower pressure limit, and floss slightly less than the 2860R. The only advantage the RS has is that the left side of the map above a 2.25 pressure ratio extends further left offering a greater surge limit. Other than that the 2860R hands the RS it's ***. It all boils down the compressor wheel and the inducer/exducer ratio/relationship.

Here.. I'll help ya there. That's what happens when you keep using those damn phones.

GT2860RS

GT2860R which has a 55 trim (.42A/R), and 62 trim (.60A/R)

60mm 55 trim (smaller inducer)

60mm 62 trim

Turbine wheels are the same across the board, but the smaller ones typically come in the .64A/R with about 15lbs/min gas flow rate for the turbine. With the larger volute of the .86A/R, turbine gas flow rate goes to about 21-22lbs/min.
