Discuss: The probability of using an Auto Transmission powered B18C w/ a PTE6062

Hello,

I am currently working on boosting a b18 and wanted to keep it automatic (Jdm gsr tranny), I know the stock auto tranny is poop but I wanted to see if anyone had a boosted b18 running a modified auto tranny? I plan on using a precision 6062 or 6266.

After doing some research so far I’ve come up with upgrading the torque converter and pts rebuild kit from level 10 along with a cooler.

I know doing a manual swap would be much easier and cheaper (I’m sure) but I wanted something different. The car won’t see much track time unless it’s roll racing. I’ve done some forum search but can’t seem to find much besides everyone saying to swap to manual or older dated post.

Thanks In advance

I can't speak specifically for a B series application but many years ago I turbocharged my stock automatic F22 Accord. The transmission only had about 130k miles on it at the time. It held up for less than 6 months before it started slipping, throwing codes, etc at a measly 200whp. Supposedly the H/F series automatics are more robust than the B series. You're talking about some pretty big turbos there which will make some decent power. I can't see how, even with those modifications, it will hold up to any substantial amount of power.

Yea, I was hoping there would be a chance to run those turbos on an auto but it seems that may not be the case specially when it will be my daily.

I came across a post a while back when someone mentioned the level 10 torque converter was giving issues at 300whp but didn’t see any updates since then.

My main goal is at least 500whp

DSM auto Trannys are extremely stout. Many people run 10's with stock auto trannys with just a line pressure mod. That doesn't really help you unless you can get super creative and go b to 4g63 lol.

It's gonna be torque more than horsepower that will dictate how much power you can run with the auto trans. Generally speaking if you could move the powerband far into the higher rpm range you may have better luck and be able to manage 300whp-350whp for awhile, who knows. Eventually the trans would grenade though and that's not something you want happening to your daily. Spending all that money on the auto would be a gamble anyway because you could get all those mods and still struggle to make 300whp reliably with it. It may be wise to rethink your approach or lower your horsepower expectations.

Why create a problem for yourself all in the name of being different? Its not really worth the effort, time, or money.

If your main goal is 500hp and you are DEAD SET on keeping an auto trans then my suggestion would be to swap in a level 10 unit and go DOWN in turbo size quite a bit.

That particular statement is totally subjective. Building around what you have is what it's all about. If for some reason it is just mechanically impossible, that's understandable. On that note, look at how much of the mod scene is already custom fabbed per setup/scenario, especially on "extreme" builds. Being different is the whole idea of it.. lol!
