Discuss: Has anyone here solved the D16Y8 (P2P) timing issue?
I've been reading a lot about people's setups that keep popping headgaskets and motors because of the ignition timing issue with Y8's. I am ready to install my new setup with RC 550's and Crome.
Any pointers on how I can keep my block and head together???
Or will I have to swap to a D16Y8 block/D16Z6 head combo?

currently running the p2p bin from crome
all i did was set idle timing to 12* instead of 21.75* in the bin
then set timing on the distrubitor to match 12*

Just run the stock Y8 maps and strap it on a dyno with some det cans and tune it out.
J.Davis suggested that the map actually reads the knock sensor and adds timing where necessary. I don't have his quote handy. But the best way to do is is start with the P2P maps.
You will have to add timing to the low cam ignition map, you will notice that it spools the turbo like crazy b/c of the insane ignition retard.
So dyno + Det cans + tuning = Solution

I think they can definitley help. No reason to not use them in this case.

no they dont, your wrong.
people run LOTS of power through stock blocks, and never blow hg's...but people blow tons of y8 engines gaskets.. ... same basic block. hmmm..
nothing blows HG's like detonation. i've done a few. not any more. currently at about 22 psi, stock a6 block, just rods/pistons/arps.
WOT afr is about 10.9-11.0
this thread is trying to get insight as to why the y8 setup is different.
obviously elspool knows his ****, making the power his sig. claims..but he must be doing something right. what it is that he is doing right is what this thread is trying to figure out
