Detonation with greddy blue box?

Re: Detonation with greddy blue box? (dmah)
When I was using the blue box on my turbo EX, I had a flat a/f ratio of around 12.0-12.5 all the way to redline. But mine seems to be a rarity.

the only time i detonated with the blue box was when i installed the kit with 87 octane in the tank. got some 91 put in with a 255 fuel pump, and everything was fine.

Is an intank fuel pump required when running 310cc injectors? I'm using 91 octane right now and I guess the next step would be the pump if any of you guys recommend that be done. I just don't know why my car is detonating when I know other people that have the same setup that are running VERY rich (like 10.5:1). I really can't tell from the plugs because they are too new.

the blue box doesn't adjust timing. have you had that checked out yet? maybe your distributor timing got overly advanced somehow.

Daniel,
My timing is right at 16 degrees. That was using 2 Snap-On timing guns. I was paranoid that one was not working correctly so I used another one and got the same results.

What is this crap?
Re: Detonation with greddy blue box? (Daniel)
as far as i know, the blue box does no adjust timing.
i think its a really bad idea to run a turbo with no timing retard while in boost. :-/ i run the greddy kit with a standalone so i retard the timing in boost myself... i dont see how you can run stock timing even at 5.5psi with risk of detonation - even inaudible detonation that is harming the motor.

Greddy says to leave everything at stock settings but it isn't cutting it. I am going to retard it 2 degrees and see if that helps. I had a 97 GSR with a Drag kit and left the timing at 16 degrees and had no problems with detonation. Ran great for 1 1/2 years. But better safe than sorry.

thats interesting / amazing. on 91 octane too?

yep, GReddy designed their kits for use with all stock equipment, so their instruction packet says use stock timing, stock fuel pump, etc. however, this kit was designed when 92 octane was available in many places, but in CA and a few other states, they switched down to 91 a few years ago. maybe just that 1 grade of octane is enough to cause detonation?

Re: Detonation with greddy blue box? (Daniel)
I think I was using 92 octane back when I had my 97 GSR so that could have made a difference. I had my timing retarded last week down to 13 degrees and all I can say is . Very sluggish.

I'm getting detonation @ 7 psi with the blue box, using a stock pump, injectors and timing. So I suggest retarding timnig 1-2 deg.

Re: Detonation with greddy blue box? (dmah)
no, everything is soldered and taped correctly, I quadruple checked my work. since the blue box doesn't affect timing, I figure that's the problem, not running lean. We'll see on sunday when I replace my plugs and retard timing.
